PHOENIX – The Portland State softball team closed out its opening weekend at the Grand Canyon Purple Classic falling to No. 2 Oklahoma 8-0.

The Vikings open the year 1-4 after dropping four games to ranked opponents over the weekend, earning their one win over Grand Canyon on Friday (5-4). Â

Redshirt freshman
Olivia Grey took to the circle for the Vikings on Sunday morning, facing one of the best offenses in the nation who entered the weekend with a .512 team batting average.

The Sooners took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first and never looked back. Grey had three strikeouts through 4.1 innings of work before true freshman
Bailey Rose took things over in the fifth. Rose faced three Sooner batters, recording two outs to get the Vikings out of a bases-loaded jam.Â

Portland State was held hitless throughout the contest, facing a trio of Sooner pitchers who combined for the no-hitter. OU shut the door early, earning an 8-0 win after five innings.

Marissa Bruno each recorded a team-best four hits over the weekend. True freshmen
Shea Garcia and
Logan Riggenbach followed close behind leading the Vikings over the five-game stretch, with a .375 average (3-8).

The PSU pitching staff combined for 27 strikeouts, Grey leading the way with 15 throughout her three appearances. Defensively the Vikings were solid all-around, tallying just two errors through five games.

Portland State will return to action on Friday, as they travel to Eugene for the Oregon Invite. They will play four games over two days against Boise State and No.8 Oregon. Â
