OGDEN, Utah – The Portland State women's soccer team was victim of a late goal on Sunday afternoon as they fell to Weber State 3-2 in Ogden.
The Vikings dropped to 4-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in Big Sky action. Weber State is now 9-6 and 6-1 against Big Sky opponents.
It was an action-packed opening 15 minutes as both teams got on the board early. Weber State was the first to strike less than three minutes into the match.
Ani Jensen found the equalizer for the Vikings in the 15th minute, capitalizing on just the second shot attempt of the game for PSU. The sophomore found the lower-left corner of the goal following an assist from
Sofi Papastamos.
The Wildcats continued the scoring frenzy as they netted the go-ahead goal in the 17th minute to take the lead. Things slowed down offensively for both squads for the remainder of the half, sending the Vikings into the break trailing 2-1.
Wasting no time in the second half, the Vikings knotted things at two when Papastamos found her second assist of the day, this time to
Raniyah Burton for the goal.
Following a trio of shot attempts over three minutes by the Wildcats, Lily Webster finally found the clincher in the 85th minute to give Weber State en route to the 3-2 win.
Entering the contest as one of the top-shooting teams in the conference, the Vikings were held to just six shots on the day. Burton led the way with two shots while
Sidney O'billovich recorded four saves in 90 minutes of action.
Portland State will return to action in its final homestand of the regular season next week. They will host Southern Utah on Friday, Oct. 22 (1 PM) before taking on Northern Arizona (12 PM) on Sunday, Oct. 24 at Hillsboro Stadium.
