HILLSBORO, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team battled Southern Utah to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Friday afternoon at Hillsboro Stadium.
With just one regular-season game remaining, the Vikings moved to 4-9-2 overall and 2-4-2 in Big Sky action. The Thunderbirds are now 1-13-2 and 0-6-2 in conference play.
Southern Utah took an early lead less than ten minutes into action when Kamryn Farro sent a free-kick to an open Natalia Sepulveda for the first goal of the afternoon.
The Vikings saw several near misses in the opening minutes, including back-to-back attempts from Natalia Blanco and Megan Cornett that sailed just right of the net.
Chloe Huling netted the equalizer for Portland State in the 25th minute. The Junior forward found a deflected ball in-stride, sending a strike over the hands of Thunderbird goalkeeper Megan Short to tie things at one.
The Viking attack was held to just two shots in the second half, the last chance missing wide in the 81st minute off the foot of Ani Jensen as the match headed to overtime.
The Thunderbirds held their ground in the first overtime despite facing three consecutive shots from the PSU attack. Viking goalkeeper Sidney O'billovich did the same, notching two of her three saves on the day in the final minutes of the opening overtime period to keep the score locked at one.
In search of the golden goal, Huling and Sienna Higinbotham were the two Vikings to fire off shots in the second overtime but were unsuccessful as time expired.
Huling led the Vikings with three shots, putting all three on target. Thanks to a season-best performance from the Viking defense, O''billovich faced just ten shots in goal while recording three saves.
It was a historic day on the pitch for fifth-year senior Liz Hansen. The defender made her 78th appearance as a Viking which tied the program's record for games played.
The Vikings will enter Sunday just one point behind Eastern Washington and Sacramento State in the standings. Ready to put it all on the line, Portland State will need a victory to keep its postseason hopes alive as they celebrate Senior Day against Northern Arizona at Hillsboro Stadium (noon). Â
