BOZEMAN, Mont. – Playing its first Big Sky road competition of the season, the Portland State men's tennis team dropped a dual against Montana State, falling 6-1 at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Vikings move to 4-4 on the season and 2-1 in conference play while the Bobcats improve to 5-3 and 1-0 in the BSC.
MSU took an early lead after capturing the doubles point, winning 6-4 at No. 2 and 6-2 at No. 3.
Tommy Edwards and
Sam Roberts put together a strong performance on court one, collecting a 6-3 win to snap a two-match losing streak.
In singles,
Matteo Fortini tallied his fifth straight win, defeating Montana State's No. 1 in straight sets 6-1 before holding on to win 7-6 in a tiebreaker.
Joaquin Espinoza edged out Edwards at the No. 2 spot, winning 6-3, 7-6 as the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead in the dual.
Montana State locked up the dual with wins at No. 3 and No. 4, both matches going to a third set.
Nikola Dimitrijevic fell behind early 6-4 in set one before bouncing back to tie the match with a 6-4 win in the second. MSU held on, putting together another 6-4 performance in the third. Roberts, playing at No. 4, took an early lead with a 6-3 victory to start the match but dropped the final two, losing 6-4, 7-5.
The Vikings continue conference play tomorrow as Portland State travels to Montana to take on the Griz at the Peak Racquet Club at 3 p.m. MT.
