Chiles Center Magic Strikes Again as Vikings Go 14-for-14 on Personal Bests at Portland Indoor Three

RESULTS

PORTLAND, Ore. —
Give the Portland State track & field team another couple meets at the University of Portland's Chiles Center, and all of the school's distance records will be on the table.

Fourteen Vikings competed at the Portland Indoor Three Sunday, and – counting debuts – all 14 set new indoor bests while competing at the Chiles Center for a third time this season. That follows 17 personal bests at the Portland Indoor Two just two weeks earlier.

The Vikings went 10-for-10 on personal bests between the men's and women's mile Sunday, where a number of Vikings improved the times they set on the same track just a few weeks earlier.

Zoe Eberspecher made the biggest splash of any Viking with her personal best in the women's mile Sunday. Eberspecher shaved 22 seconds off her previous best while placing second overall in a time of 5:08.84. Eberspecher's jump came just four weeks after setting an eight-second personal best with a time of 5:31.00 at the Portland Indoor One on Jan. 26.

Phoebe Brown closely followed Eberspecher while placing third in 5:09.43, setting a five-second personal best over a time she set two weeks earlier at the Portland Indoor Two. Sophie Jones also set her previous best at the Portland Indoor Two, and shaved nine seconds off that time Sunday while finishing fifth in 5:16.31. Delaney White followed just a tenth of a second behind Jones while setting her own personal best at 5:16.43.

Carissa Rodriguez had not run a mile in her two previous appearances at the Chiles Center, but finished in 5:41.88 Sunday to beat her season-opening time in the event by over 36 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Vikings swept the top four spots in the men's mile, with three freshmen taking the top three spots in Sam Lingwall, Zach Grams and Kelly Shedd. Erik Solano followed Shedd at fourth overall, while Nigel Leonis finished a little bit back at ninth.

Lingwall won the men's mile with a time of 4:27.93 Sunday, nearly seven seconds faster than his previous best, which came at the Portland Indoor One on Jan. 26. Grams posted a similar improvement over his own time at the Portland Indoor One, as he beat his previous best by six seconds while placing second in 4:30.17 Sunday.

Shedd and Solano each shaved a half-second off the personal bests they set two weeks ago at the Portland Indoor Two. Shedd placed third in 4:35.30 Sunday, just over two-tenths of a second ahead of Solano, who placed fourth in 4:35.52.

Leonis made his debut in the indoor mile Sunday, and placed ninth in 4:54.25.

Keely Wolf and Mitchell Tolander each ran their first indoor 800 races as Vikings Sunday. Wolf placed fourth in the women's 800 in a time of 2:25.49, while Tolander finished sixth in the men's race in 2:03.24. Clinton Omondi, meanwhile, shaved three seconds off his indoor best in the 800 while placing eighth in 2:06.30.

Monica Salazar set the first personal best of the day for Portland State while competing as the lone Viking in the women's 3,000 meters. Salazar broke 11 minutes for the first time in her career Sunday, placing sixth in 10:53.31.

Salazar's previous best came two weeks earlier at the Portland Indoor Two, where she finished in 11:01.89 – eight-and-a-half seconds slower than her time Sunday. That came after Salazar set a 12-second personal best at the first Portland Indoor meet, as Salazar has shaved 25 seconds off her 3k best this season.

All of that work has come at the Chiles Center for Salazar, where she hasn't been alone in setting a series of personal bests this season.
