LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – For the second day in a row, the Portland State Vikings split its two games of the day, opening with a 4-2 win over Army before dropping the second game 11-2 against UC Davis at the Rosetta Canyon Sports Park.
The Vikings are now 2-2 at the Golden State Classic while moving to 3-6 overall on the season.
Tayler Gunesch recorded two hits on the day while adding to her current hitting streak of five games.
Serafine Parrish pitched her second complete game of the season, picking up a win over Army.
GAME ONE: Portland State 4, Army 2
After leaving three players on base in the first inning, the Vikings got on the scoreboard in the third inning as
Marissa Bruno reached base with a bunt, eventually scoring from third on a wild pitch to give Portland State a 1-0 lead.
The Viking missed out on a few other opportunities on the day, leaving a total of 12 runners on base, including three more in fifth. Portland State finsihed with 10 hits in the game while Gunesch led with two hits and one RBI.
Parrish picked up her first win of the season to improve her record to 1-1 as a starter, tossing seven complete innings with two runs, one earned, off of seven hits with three strikeouts.
Army got things going in the bottom of the fifth, leading off with a single into left field. A throwing error put two runners on the bases before the Black Knights loaded the bases with a bunt single. Army tied the game when a fielder's choice to third scored one run before a single to left field brought in the second run, however, the Vikings ended the inning as
Grace Hosman threw out the runner from second at home on the same play.
Portland State regained the lead in the sixth as Hosman led off with a bunt before coming around to score on an RBI single up the middle by Gunesch. After
Darian Lindsey reached on an error, Gunesch scored on another error to give the Vikings a 3-2 lead.
The Vikings added an insurance run in the seventh, as Ponce scored after a double down the left field line by
Riley Casper.
GAME TWO: UC Davis 11, Portland State 2
Home runs sunk the Vikings in game two of the day, as UC Davis hit four bombs against Portland State.
The Vikings struck first as Lindsey hit a home run of her own, her third of the season, to give PSU an early 1-0 lead.
After a couple of scoreless innings, the Aggies jumped out ahead with a four-run fourth inning, executing a double steal at second and home for their first score. Back-to-back home runs followed, giving UC Davis a 4-1 advantage.
Olivia Grey took the loss, tossing three innings with four runs allowed off of five hits and two strikeouts.
Marisol Gaona also pitched 2.2 innings with four hits and three runs allowed while
Haley Schimmel closed out the game, with 1.1 innings with four runs.
Ashley Doyle scored in the bottom of the fourth, hitting her first home run of the season over the left field fence. Portland State continued to struggle to bring runners home, leaving nine on the bases against the Aggies.
UC Davis added to its lead with three-RBI homers in the third and seventh innings to seal the victory and improve to 6-3 on the season.
The Vikings will be back in action tomorrow as they close out the Golden State Classic with one game, facing host San Jose State at 11:30 a.m.
