Vikings End Golden State Classic with 10-1 loss to San Jose State

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – Closing out the Golden State Classic, the Portland State softball team fell to host San Jose State 10-1 in five innings on Sunday afternoon at the Rosetta Canyon Sports Park.

Portland State moves to 3-7 on the season after finishing the tournament with a 2-3 record. San Jose swept all five of its games at the Classic to improve to 7-2.

The long ball sunk the Vikings for the second game in a row as the Spartans jumped ahead with a two-RBI home run in the opening inning. San Jose State added four more runs in the second inning, leading off with a double followed by a sac-bunt and an RBI single to center field.

After hitting another double to bring in their fourth run, the Spartans hit their second two-RBI homer, to go up 6-0 after two innings.

Serafine Parrish started in the circle for the Vikings, throwing 2.2 innings while allowing four runs off of five hits. With the loss, she falls to 1-2 on the season as a starter. Also pitching was Katie Schroeder (0.2 IP, five hits, four runs, two strikeouts) and Olivia Grey (0.2 IP, zero hits, two runs, five walks).

The Vikings found some life in the fourth as Grace Hosman hit a lead-off double to left field to start the inning. After a pop up, Darian Lindsey drove in her eighth run of the season, hitting a single to the left side to put the Vikings on the board.

Adding to its lead in the bottom of the inning, San Jose State hit another two-run homer before two bases-loaded walks brought in the final two runs of the game.

The Vikings continue on the road next week as they make their longest trip yet, traveling to Honolulu for the Hawaii Invitational beginning Thursday, Feb. 20.
