PORTLAND – One week after opening the season in Arizona, the Portland State softball team will travel to Southern California as the Vikings compete at the Golden State Classic, playing five teams in three days beginning on Friday, Feb. 14.

The Vikings competed at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend, finishing with a 1-4 record as they faced four Power 5 schools, three of which were ranked in the Top 25.
KAJIKAWA CLASSIC HIGHLIGHTS:
Portland State showed its offensive potential in the opening game of the season, defeating Western Michigan 13-2 in five innings.
Emily Johansen highlighted the game, recording her first career home run, a grand slam that put the Vikings past the eight-run mark in the fifth.
Picking up the win in the circle was
Katie Schroeder who tossed four innings of work, giving up two runs off of four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Western Michigan went on to upset #22 Arizona State later in the tournament.
Against fifth-ranked Arizona, the Vikings turned in a strong defensive effort led by
Darian Lindsey who recorded or assisted on seven outs in the contest.
Serafine Parrish pitched all seven innings, allowing six runs off of 11 hits with two strikeouts and only one walk. Lindsey also helped on the offensive side, hitting her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field.
Lindsey performed well throughout the tournament, hitting .333 with five hits, four runs, and six RBIs on the weekend. Freshman pitcher
Olivia Grey leads the pitching staff in strikeouts with 14 in 11.2 innings of work.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO:
Competing at UCLA's Stacey Winsberg Memorial Tournament last weekend, San Diego finished with a 2-2 record, picking up wins against Cal State Bakersfield (6-0) and Cal Poly (4-3). The Toreros lost a close matchup with Pittsburgh, falling 2-1 before fourth-ranked UCLA downed them 9-1 in five innings.
San Diego is hitting .270 after its first weekend of play, tallying 27 hits with 12 runs while executing well on the bases with four steals on four attempts. In the circle, the Toreros tallied 22 strikeouts in 24 innings while holding a 3.79 ERA. Four players are hitting above .300 with Hayley Hensley and Sara Silveyra leading with a .364 batting average.
ALL-TIME RECORD VS. SAN DIEGO:
Portland State has dominated the series against the Toreros, holding an overall record of 24-10. Playing two games against each other during the 2019 season, both teams split, each winning by a score of 3-2. The Vikings have won four of the last six meetings, all coming at either away or neutral sites.
SCOUTING UTAH STATE:
Playing at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Classic, the Aggies finished with a 1-4 overall record with their only win coming against Loyola Marymount, a 7-4 win. Utah State lost a couple close games against Pacific, 3-1, and host Fullerton, 6-2, while falling to UC Riverside 11-5 and Middle Tennessee 9-4.
Utah State struggled from the plate, holding a team batting average of .183 after five games. The Aggies tallied 24 hits on the weekend, scoring 19 runs while their opponents finished with 33 runs scored. The team combined for an ERA of 4.24 in 33 innings pitched while tallying 12 strikeouts. Mazie Macfarlane has been the standout at the plate, batting .400 with six hits but only one RBI.
ALL-TIME RECORD VS. UTAH STATE:
The Vikings hold the advantage in the all-time series against the Aggies, leading 7-3. Utah State has won two of the last three meetings, most recently picking up a 9-0 victory during the 2014 season.
SCOUTING ARMY:
Army had a very successful weekend at the Bash in the Boro hosted by Georgia Southern, coming away with a 4-1 record. The Black Knights picked up solids wins against Rutgers (8-3), East Tennessee State (7-4), and Georgia Southern (7-5) while splitting two games against Hartford, falling 12-5 before winning 9-3.
Army takes an impressive .346 batting average into this weekend with five players hitting above .300, and three hitting above .400. Leading is Ally Snelling who is hitting .550 with 11 hits in 20 at bats. She totaled 19 bases in five games and record seven RBIs. In the circle, Army combined for a team ERA of 4.80, allowing 27 runs in 35 innings of work with 32 strikeouts.
ALL-TIME RECORD VS. ARMY:
This will be the first meeting between these two teams in program history.
SCOUTING UC DAVIS:
UC Davis had a successful weekend hosting the NorCal Kickoff, finishing the weekend 4-1. The Aggies opened the weekend with a 6-2 against St. Mary's before defeating Cal Baptist 9-8 in nine innings to close out the first day. Their only loss came in a 9-3 result against Boise State. UC Davis finished with weekend with wins against Santa Clara, 11-3, and Idaho State, 5-2.
With three players hitting above .500 after the first weekend of play, the Aggies hold a team batting average of .371. Leah Polson recorded a hit in seven of her 13 at bats, hitting .538 with one home run and three RBIs. Isabella Leon leads the team with 10 RBIs, collecting three home runs with a .529 batting average.
ALL-TIME RECORD VS. UC DAVIS:
The Vikings and the Aggies have had a competitive series against each other with UC Davis leading at 22-17 all-time. UC Davis held on in extra innings in its last meeting with the Vikings, winning 4-3 in eight. Portland State last won in 2012 with a 3-1 result at a neutral site.
SCOUTING SAN JOSE STATE:
The Spartans also competed at the Titan Classic, finish with a 2-2 record. They picked up wins against UC Riverside and Middle Tennessee State 7-6 and 2-1 respectively, hitting a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh against Middle Tennessee. San Jose State lost the other two games 4-3 against Loyola Marymount and Fullerton.
Batting .212 as a team, Rayohna Sagapolu leads the Spartans with a .385 average at the plate, tallying five hits with three RBIs. Also hitting above .300 is Jocylyn Vidal at .333 while Suzy Brookshire leads in total bases with nine. San Jose holds an ERA of 3.15 while Ilona Sullivan is 1-0 with a 1.00 ERA in seven innings pitched with nine strikeouts.
ALL-TIME RECORD VS. SAN JOSE STATE:
Portland State holds a 13-10 lead in the all-time series against the Spartans but has struggled in recent history, losing the last five games. They last met for a two-game series in 2017 were San Jose State won 5-0 and 10-0 in five innings.
