EUGENE, Ore. – The Portland State women's soccer team put up a strong fight on the road against Oregon, falling in a 4-2 result at Papé Field on Friday night.
The Ducks picked up their first win of the season to improve to 1-1-1 on the season while Portland State moves to 0-2-0.
The Vikings got on the board early as
Sienna Higinbotham scored her first career goal for the Vikings in beautiful fashion, striking from 35 yards out as the ball landed in the top corner of the net to give Portland State a 1-0 lead in the second minute.
Oregon had a chance to tie in the 8
th minute with a through ball into the box but keeper
Teri Walters made a timely run before diving at the ball to prevent the shot.
The Ducks would eventually tie the match in the 10
th minute, crossing the ball into the box as Oregon's Jordan Wormdahl tipped the ball under the goalie for her fourth goal of the season.
Portland State continued to pressure Oregon as
Molly Joyce found a chance midway through the half, ending in a save at the bottom corner.
Oregon took the lead in the 31
st minute, launching the ball from 30 yards out as it lands just out of reach of Walters.
The Ducks added another goal in the final minute of the half as Walters deflected one shot before Oregon's Lilli Rask rebounded the ball and sent it into the net for a 3-1 lead at the break.
Walters played a solid first half in goal for Portland State, facing 19 shots while collecting five saves in the period.
Oregon came out firing to start the second half as Wormdahl hit another shot, just off target as it sailed over the crossbar.
In a planned goalie change,
Enya Hernandez started the second half in goal for Portland State, fending off Oregon's attack with two early saves.
The Ducks continued to collect shot attempts throughout the night with 36 total shots but only landed 13 on target. Portland State finished with five shot attempts with three shots on goal.
Oregon scored its fourth goal in the 56
th minute as Hernandez saved the first shot attempt, sending the ball into the air before the Ducks added another shot that bounced off a defender before going in.
Looking for a rhythm on offense, the Vikings got the ball into their attacking third as
Chloe Huling took a shot from the top right of the box, landing just outside the goal post.
The Vikings earned their second goal of the night in the 71
st minute when
Sofi Papastamos sent a pass to
Rilee Castilla who collected the ball in the box before turning and shooting to the lower left of the net from five yards out.
In the final 10 minutes, Oregon hit a shot off the post before sending a second attempt that landing in the arms of Hernandez for her third save of the half. She finished with four saves while both keepers combined for nine saves on the night.
The Vikings travel north as they head to Seattle University for their second straight road match on Sunday, Sept. 1.
