RESULTS

MIRAMAR, Fla. —
Ian Vickstrom capped his first year in college with a bronze medal Friday, as the Viking freshman placed third in the 10,000 meters at the USATF U20 Outdoor Championships.

Vickstrom, who held the second-slowest qualifying time going into the meet, moved up the field steadily throughout the race and placed third behind Daniel Kilrea of Notre Dame and Nicholas Yanek of Georgia. Kilrea and Yanek earned the two guaranteed spots at the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships in July with their 1-2 finish, but Vickstrom would be the first alternate should either runner not be able to compete.

Vickstrom out-raced a quality field Friday that included New Mexico's Nehemiah Cionelo, who came into the meet as the only runner besides Kilrea with a sub-30-minute qualifying time. All told, Vickstrom beat seven runners who came into the meet with faster qualifying times, including several from power schools like Paul Stafford and Matthew Newland of Florida State and James Maniscalco of UCONN.

Vickstrom finished in 32:21.81 Friday, not quite fast enough to beat his qualifying time of 32:02.14 at the Bryan Clay Invitational in April. Vickstrom's time Friday still would have been the second-fastest 10k time by a Viking freshman in the past 16 years if Vickstrom hadn't run faster earlier in the season. Vickstrom also holds the fifth-fastest 5k time by a Viking freshman after running a personal-best 15:01.76 in the 5k at the Portland Track Festival two weeks ago.
