Krauel Wins 50th Career Match, Vikings Sweep Warriors

Toby Krauel arrived at Portland State in 2014, taking over a program that had never finished a season with more than nine wins. Now, in his sixth season at the helm, the Vikings have had two 10-plus win season and are nearing a third this season. In his program turnaround Krauel has seen plenty of victories, but this Saturday was special. Krauel won his 50th career match as the men's tennis coach, beating Lewis-Clark State 7-0.

"It means a lot to me," Krauel said. "If you look back at the tradition when I came in we had some good players like Brent Wheeler, who passed away this last summer, Wil Cochrane and Ian Risenhoover. That was my first crew, and they were really solid.

We have just improved our talent and our processes; how we prepare and train. We have been lucky with the guys that we have that they really buy in and work hard in the offseason and they are a really classy group so I'm proud of them. Winning is great, but how we carry ourselves is the most important thing because that lasts a lifetime," Krauel said.

This may not have been the most thrilling match of Krauel's career, as the Vikings rolled in every match for the 7-0 sweep, but it is significant. He is the first men's coach to win 50 career matches at Portland State.

The Vikings won all three doubles matches against Lewis-Clark State and won five of the six doubles matches in straight sets. Krauel mixed up his doubles teams on Saturday, putting Matteo Fortini and Tommy Edwards together at the No. 1 doubles spot, where they picked up a 7-5 win.

At No. 2, Lucas Castelo Branco and Avery West won 6-2 and the team of Majeed Bukhari and Sam Roberts stayed together and won 6-2 at No. 2 for the doubles point. In singles, Krauel had to shift the lineup around the absence of Nikola Dimitrijevic, who has been the hottest singles player for the Vikings so far this year.

Fortini, the defending Big Sky Player of the Week, moved back to the top of the Viking lineup and won the only three set match of the day against Alexandre D'Aboville. Fortini won 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 to win his third consecutive match.

Castelo Branco went back to No. 2, where he cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 win to improve to 8-4 on the season. Edwards won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 to run his season record to 9-3 in singles play.

West moved back into the singles lineup after playing in just half of the Vikings matches this season, winning his third match of the season 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4. Sam Roberts stayed hot, winning his fourth straight match at No. 5. He is now 6-6 on the year.

Otto Holtari improved to 6-2 with a win at No. 6, knocking off his opponent 7-5, 6-2.

The Vikings and Warriors also competed in several bonus matches. In a doubles match, Holtari and Ryan Nakajima won 7-6 against Marcus Gavelin and Gregory Arthur. In singles Sahal Bukary and Nakajima each won a pro set against Jackson Lee and Gregory Arthur, respectively.

The Vikings return to Big Sky on March 22 on the road against Southern Utah.
