Vikings Fall to Southern Utah in First Big Sky Road Match

The road can present many challenges, a lesson the Portland State men's tennis team learned on Friday afternoon. After changing the location of the match, waiting on rain delays and playing outdoors for the first time all year, the Vikings fell 4-3 in a conference match to Southern Utah. The loss drops PSU to 9-4/4-2 BSC, while Southern Utah improves to 3-2 in Big Sky play.

The Vikings and Thunderbirds split the singles matches three a piece, making the doubles point the determining factor. Portland State dropped all three doubles matches and lost the critical point.

Matteo Fortini and Tommy Edwards dropped a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles. That, combined with a win at No. 2, won the doubles point for the Thunderbirds. Majeed Bukhari and Sam Roberts won at No. 3, but the Vikings couldn't get the point.

Still, the Vikings fought back and took the lead at one point. Avery West stepped up in a big way for a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5 to kick off singles play and tie the match at 1-all. The win improves West to 4-3 on the year.

In the second singles match to finish, Tommy Edwards outlasted Remus Cope in a tight second set. Edwards won 6-3 in the opener and battled hard to get a 7-5 win for a straight-set victory. After that match, the Vikings had a 2-1 lead.

But Southern Utah responded. At No. 3, Agustin Tamagnone defeated Nikola Dimitrijevic 6-3, 6-4. They then picked up another win at No. 6 when Juan Erro knocked off Sam Roberts 6-4, 6-3 to put SUU ahead 3-2.

Lucas Castelo Branco evened things up once again with a win at No. 2. Once he found his rhythm in the second set, he cruised, winning 7-6, 6-1. The match came down to No. 1, where Fortini fell in a heartbreaker. Salvador Mijares edged out the Viking, winning 7-5, 6-4.

Portland State will return to action on Sunday when they take on Northern Arizona in Flagstaff.

MATCH NOTES: Portland State leads the all-time series vs. Southern Utah 6-1 … Tommy Edwards is now tied for second in Portland State history with 28 overall singles wins.
