Vikings Finish Road Trip with Loss to Northern Arizona

Portland State men's tennis fell to Big Sky leading Northern Arizona on Sunday morning in Flagstaff as the Lumberjacks remained undefeated in conference play. The Vikings, meanwhile, drop to 9-5 and 4-3 in Big Sky play.

In doubles, Northern Arizona won 6-3 at No. 1 and 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch the first point of the day. In the top match, Matteo Fortini and Tommy Edwards were tied at 4-all when the point was clinched, leaving the match unfinished.

Northern Arizona used the bottom of the lineup to then clinch the singles, winning at court four and six early and then earning the clinching point on court five. All of the matches ended in two sets.

Portland State challenged at the top of the lineup, but the Lumberjacks were up to the task. Matteo Fortini gave three-time All-Big Sky performer Tim Handel a run at the top spot, ultimately falling 6-4, 6-3.

At No. 2, Lucas Castelo fell in a third set tiebreak. He took the opening set 7-6 (3) for an early lead, but dropped the second set 6-2. Since the overall match had already been clinched, they played a super tiebreaker to determine a winner. In another tight contest, Castelo Branco fell 12-10.

Tommy Edwards also went to a tiebreaker to determine the match, and just like his teammate his fight came up just a little bit short. Edwards dropped the opening set at No. 3 6-2 but rallied and won the second set 7-3 in a tiebreaker. In the super tiebreaker, he fell 10-5.

The Vikings now take a two-game break from Big Sky play. They return home on April 5 for Senior Day against Pacific.

MATCH NOTES: Portland State trails the all-time series vs. Northern Arizona 2-14.
