It took an impressive performance for the Portland State Vikings, but after some near-losses they prevailed over a feisty George Fox in a 7-0 sweep to win their third consecutive match and improve to 4-1 on the young season.
George Fox came out embracing the underdog role in the doubles competition, bringing a ton of energy and jumping out to leads in two of the three matches. The No. 1 doubles pairing for the Bruins went ahead 4-0, but when
Avery West and
Tommy Edwards got things rolling there was no stopping them.
Westwards won the final six games, taking the match and sealing the doubles point on an impressive backhand volley by Edwards. They followed up a 6-2 win by
Matteo Fortini and
Lucas Castelo Branco at No. 2 to claim the doubles point.
At No. 3,
Majeed Bukhari and
Sam Roberts also needed a comeback to win. After trailing 5-3, the pairing rebounded to break twice down the stretch for a 7-5 win.
The Vikings have played the same doubles teams in every match this season, and all three have identical 4-1 records. Also, the three teams all carry three match winning streaks into tomorrow's matchup with Boise State.
"I was super impressed with our comebacks in the doubles," head coach
Toby Krauel said. "We played a real fired up, energized team that screams a lot and fights hard, but we swept the doubles which was great."
The Vikings swept the singles match as well, but not without a little drama.
In his singles match, just as he did in doubles, Edwards fell behind early. He trailed 5-2 in the first set against Rox Rogers, but the junior once again showed no quit. The Viking won four straight games to help force a tiebreak.
But Edwards fell behind again, this time trailing 4-1 in the seven-point tiebreak. For the third time on the day, he rose to the challenge. Edwards reeled off six straight points to win the tiebreak and take the first set. He won a comfortable second set 6-2 to take the match.
Edwards' win made it 3-0 in favor of the Vikings. The first singles point came by way of
Nikola Dimitrijevic at the No. 4 line. Dimitrijevic had one of the best Viking performances on the day, sweeping his match 6-4, 6-1.
Matteo Fortini clinched the dual for the Vikings with a hard-fought three set victory against Will Leach. Leach, a high-energy lefty that gave Portland State's No. 1 doubles team problems, caused problems for Fortini in the second set.
The Viking jumped out to a good first set, winning 6-2, but ran into a roadblock in the second set. Leach had the answers, playing a good ground game from the baseline and taking the second set 6-3.
In the final set, Fortini set himself apart from the competition. He served well and moved the ball around the court, taking it 6-3 for the fourth Viking point of the day.
He may have started later than all the other Vikings, but West made quick work of his opponent at No. 5 singles. In a fast match, West won 6-2, 6-3 to put PSU ahead 5-0.
The No. 2 doubles match was a marathon, and it gave George Fox its only point of the day. Luke Lemaitre, the other half of the tough No. 1 doubles team, won against
Lucas Castelo Branco in the longest match of the day.
Castelo Branco took the opening set 6-2 but fell in the second set 3-6. In the third set, Castelo Branco jumped out to a 4-3 before he started to cramp up. He dropped two consecutive games and took a trainers break, but couldn't get the momentum back and fell 6-4.
"We had some tough matches with the top two guys," Krauel said. "Matteo kind of settled his ship and pulled that out in the third set. I thought Lucas played great tennis he just had a little injury there in the third set that slowed him down."
At No. 6,
Sam Roberts cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 to get to the 6-1 final score.
"Tommy was down in his match and came back to win. Avery played solid and Nikola and Sam kind of had routine days in the office."
Ryan Nakajima and Dimitrijevic won a bonus doubles match 7-5. There were also a couple bonus singles matches, which
Otto Holtari won 6-2, 6-2 and
Sahal Bukary won 8-4 for the Vikings.
Portland State now takes on a talented Boise State team tomorrow morning in a neutral site match.
"I'm just really happy with the guys effort," Krauel said. "It is cold in here and they fought really hard to beat a good team 6-1 and improve to 4-1 on the year and hopefully take that momentum to Eugene tomorrow and get after Boise State."
