The winning streak came to an end for the Portland State men's tennis team Saturday morning, but not without a good fight. The Vikings fell in a neutral-site match, played in Eugene, against Boise State 4-3.
It ended a streak of three straight matches won by the Vikings, who fall to 4-2 on the year heading into conference play next weekend.
The doubles continued to be a strength, as the Vikings went undefeated to claim the first point of the day.
At No. 1 doubles, Tommy Edwards and Avery West continued their impressive season with a 6-2 win. The duo is now 5-1 on the season and has won four consecutive matches. Majeed Bukhari and Sam Roberts also picked up a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point.
Bukhari/Roberts are also putting together an impressive season so far, heading into Big Sky play with a 5-1 record and a four match winning streak.
Boise State just outmatched the Vikings in the singles competition, taking four of the six matches for the dual victory.
At the top spot, Matteo Fortini bounced back from a three-set scare against George Fox on Friday. He made quick work of the Broncos' top man, Jack Heslin, sweeping 6-2, 6-2. Fortini is now 5-1 this season with four of his wins coming at No. 1. He is one of three Vikings carrying a winning streak as he has been victorious in his last four matches.
Tommy Edwards also won his fourth consecutive match at No. 3 singles for the only other singles point for Portland State. Edwards, a comeback kid on Friday, also had a dramatic match. He won a three setter 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to improve to 5-0 on the year at the third line. His only loss came against Portland, when he played No. 4.
After a marathon match Friday that ended with cramps and tightness in his legs, Lucas Castelo Branco fought valiantly in the first set before being outpaced in a 7-5, 6-1 loss. Avery West fell 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4, Nikola Dimitrijevic lost 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 and Sam Roberts lost 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Vikings return home next week to start Big Sky Conference play. They will take on Idaho on Friday at 1:00 p.m. and Sacramento State on Saturday at 6:45 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Vancouver Tennis Center.
