The Portland State Football Program has signed 16 student-athletes on National Letter of Intent Day. Combined with the nine who signed during the early signing period on Dec. 19, PSU has added 25 new student-athletes.
Among the 25 signees, 18 are high schoolers and seven are transfers. There are 15 on the defensive side of the ball, nine on offense and one on special teams.

"My staff did an incredible job of going and finding the fastest student-athletes we could," said Head Coach Bruce Barnum. "It was a need of ours to get faster everywhere on the field. I think we have done that with this group. We call it the "Year of the Cheetah." We have to get fast. The faster we get the better we will be.

"I need to commend the staff, and I am excited about the personalities and the talent we have coming to the Park Blocks. My football team also did a great job of hosting this group of recruits. They helped improve the locker room, added to the personality of the team and brought in some great talent to compete with.

"In fact, some of these high school kids will have a chance to play right away because of their talent and the new redshirt rule."

DEFENSE
"We had a larger need on defense than on offense this year," said Barnum. "We took a bunch of guys both up front and in back this year."

Among the defensive players are four defensive linemen, four linebackers and seven defensive backs.

"We knew we needed more speed on defense. That's what we set out to do and I believe we accomplished that. These guys will compete with our current team," Barnum said.

"Greg Oliver (5-10, 165, North Las Vegas-Faith Lutheran HS) and Justus Legg (6-4, 240, Auburn, WA-Riverside HS) are highly recruited, very talented individuals. One is a defensive lineman, the other a defensive back, and they lead a strong group we brought in on that side of the ball. They have speed at their positions, as does cornerback Jalan Harbour (6-0, 170, Scottsdale CC). All those guys have a chance to play right now."

Barnum is also thrilled with the local connections the Viking program has made. Six players are from Oregon high schools with another from just across the Columbia River.

"Zakhayas Dennis-Lee (5-11, 185, Oregon City HS) and Justice Pagan (6-2, 220, Clackamas HS), I think, are the two best players in the state of Oregon this year. And I am happy that they decided to stay home. It is great to get these talented kids from the metro area," Barnum said.

Pagan, a linebacker, was the Oregon 6A and Mt. Hood Conference Defensive Player of the Year. He, and Jay Tuinei (6-1, 235, Las Vegas, NV-Arbor View HS) will bring a formidable presence right away to the Vikings. They are added to a pair of linebackers that also should have an immediate impact, Zack Mandera (6-1, 220, Roseburg HS) and Moses Finau (6-1, 240, Sacramento, CA-Humboldt State), who signed early. Finau was the Freshman of the Year in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference this past season and transferred as Humboldt State has discontinued its program.

"Moses and Zack fit our mold at linebacker. Zack is a tough guy who committed early to us because he wanted to be a Viking. He wanted to be a part of what we are doing," said Barnum. "Moses I have a history with. I am friends with his high school coach. I think that helped sway things a little bit. He was aware of our program. He had a heck of a year at Humboldt State. So those two will be great additions."

Kennedy Freeman (6-2, 240, Aiea, HI-Punahou HS) and Ethan Tela-Porter (6-2, 285, Graham, WA-Graham-Kaposwin HS) are also a couple of talented defensive linemen to joining Legg in this class.

Another DL, early signee Jayson Pace (6-2, 260, Temecula, CA-Palomar CC), still has three years of eligibility and should contribute in 2019.

"We need pass rushers. Jayson is one we are hoping can thrive in that category. He has some experience and he is fast," said Barnum.

Joining Harbour and Oliver at defensive back in this signing class are three others with great size; Michael Jackson (6-2, 185, Westlake Village, CA-Oaks Christian HS), Emonte' Scott (6-3, 185, Seattle-O'Dea HS) and Karsonne Winters (6-3, 195, Las Vegas, NV-Palo Verde HS). Scott played quarterback in high school as well.

Semaj Bolin (5-10, 170, North Las Vegas-Coronado) and Davion Gaines (6-0, 170, Tacoma-Stadium HS) signed with the Vikings in December, giving PSU seven newcomers in the back row in 2019.

OFFENSE
Dennis-Lee, who was mentioned earlier, comes to PSU after a pair of 1,000-yard rushing seasons at Oregon City High School. He will expand the talent at running back for the Vikings.

Two other local recruits who play skill positions include JoJo Siofele (5-10, 205, Camas, WA-Union HS), and Keyvaun Eady (6-3, 190, Tigard-Southridge HS). Siofele was a running back and a slot receiver who had over 3,000 all-purpose yards and 35 touchdowns in high school. He and Eady, an All-Conference receiver at Southridge, will add to the offensive attack.

Making an immediate impact on the offensive line should be Dontae Powell (6-6, 330, Richland, WA-Arizona Western CC). He originally committed to Washington State and was recruited by other FBS schools. Powell has played the last two years at Arizona Western College. He was added to the line along with early signee John Krahn (6-10, 410, Riverside, CA-Riverside CC).

"He's the biggest man in college football and he can move," Barnum said of Krahn. "He is a guy we need to compete right away and push for a spot on the offensive line. I feel he has the size we need. We have a tradition of tough offensive linemen. John just happens to be the biggest."

Also joining the Vikings on the offensive line is Richard Estrella (6-4, 315, Eugene-Churchill HS), a high schooler with great size.

The Vikings added two quarterbacks during the early signing period, filling in the classes behind returning juniors Davis Alexander and Jalani Eason. Dante Chachere (6-3, 170) is a true freshman, while Jalen Chatman (6-0, 185) is a redshirt freshman, transferring from Rutgers.

"Chachere is a true freshman and Jalen fills in the class ahead of him and behind Davis and Jalani," Barnum said. "These two are very talented. Jalen did not play at Rutgers, but he had some history with us. He had been on our campus (during his high school recruitment). He likes our offense because it fits him. He is a true dual-threat quarterback, and has great, great speed. Chachere is a dual threat as well. He's just a pup, but he has something the others don't, he has good height. Both of these players are very athletic."

Another skill player joining the Vikings is a dynamic tight end, Elias Spence (6-4, 220, Medford-North Medford HS). Spence has excelled at both running back and tight end in high school, putting up huge numbers.

Portland State has brought in Seth Vernon (6-5, 230, Santa Rosa, CA-Santa Rosa JC) to punt. He is a transfer from Santa Rosa Junior College who rated fifth in the nation at the Chris Sailor Kickers Camp.

Portland State will host a National Signing Day party on Feb. 16 at 5 p.m. prior to the Portland State men's basketball game with Southern Utah. The event takes place at Hoffman Hall on the PSU campus.

Spring Football will begin early this year, with the first practice taking place on Feb. 20 at Stott Community Field. The Viking Spring Game is scheduled for Mar. 16. A practice schedule is forthcoming.

Portland State returns 50 letterwinners from a young squad in 2018. Nineteen starters return, including nine on offense, eight on defense and two on special teams.
