Match Recap: Men's Tennis | | Jackson Wagner

Vikings Beat Seattle for Second Time

On a day when many Americans find themselves crowded around televisions eating too much food, the Portland State men's tennis team went to work in a cold tennis bubble in Seattle. The Vikings, in a rematch against the Seattle U Redhawks, dominated their second consecutive match to improve to 3-1 on the season on Super Bowl Sunday.

Tommy Edwards became the winningest Viking of all time at No. 1 doubles, combining with Avery West to win 7-5. It was the 27th career win for Edwards. The other two Viking doubles teams also won, sweeping the doubles competition for the third time this season.

There were some tight matches at the top of the draw, where head coach Toby Krauel mixed up his top two players. Lucas Castelo Branco, coming off a 6-0, 6-1 win against Lewis & Clark on Saturday, bumped up to play No. 1. He dropped his first set at the top spot 4-6, but was able to fight back for a 6-2 win in the second set. He sealed the match in a 10-point tiebreak third set, winning 10-7.

Matteo Fortini dropped to No. 2, where he also had to make a comeback to get a point. He fell 4-6 in the opening set. He nearly dropped a straight set match, but was able to win the tiebreaker in the second set and win cruise to a 10-1 win in the third set tiebreaker.

Tommy Edwards continued his momentum, winning his third match of the year in singles with a straight-sets 6-3, 6-1 win. After sitting out the singles against Lewis & Clark, Nikola Dimitrijevic came back into the lineup in dominating fashion, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 4.

Otto Holtari won another match at No. 6. He needed a comeback to win on Saturday, but had breathing room against Seattle winning 6-1, 6-3. The Redhawks won at No. 5 singles to get their only point on the day.

The Vikings return home next week for a match against George Fox on Feb. 8 before heading to Eugene for a neutral-site match against Boise State.

MATCH NOTES: The Vikings improve to 11-5 all-time against Seattle … Tommy Edwards won his 27th career match at No. 1 doubles to set the Vikings' program record.
