Vikings Finish Weekend with Winning Record After Sunday Split

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Vikings split their final two games of the Amy S. Harrison Classic to finish the weekend with a 3-2 record. Portland State fell behind early but had their comeback fall short in a 12-9 loss to Maryland. The Vikings then closed out the weekend with a 6-5 win over UC Riverside.

The Vikings took advantage of the warm California weather with five home runs on the weekend, three coming Sunday. Darian Lindsey, Kaela Morrow, and Rachel Menlove all went yard for the first time this season during Sunday's games. Lindsey and Morrow each hit .500 on the day, going 4-for-8, while driving in four runs apiece.

Portland State (6-8 overall) got on board first in the top of the second in game two against UC Riverside. Sala Pedebone doubled to center with one out. She scored the game's first run three batters later when Ashley Doyle singled up the middle.

UC Riverside plated an unearned run in the bottom of the inning off starter Katie Schroeder to tie the game. After a scoreless third inning, the Vikings broke the game open with four runs in the top of the fourth.

Menlove led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, her first of the year. After a lineout, Doyle, Riley Casper, and Lindsey each singled to load the bases. The next three batters each drove in a run to put the Vikings up 5-1.

After the Highlanders got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, the Vikings added another in the top of the fifth to go up 6-2.

UC Riverside added a run in the fifth, another in the sixth, and one more in the seventh to pull within one but Schroeder was able to close out the game and secure the win. She evened her record on the season with her third win. She allowed five runs, four earned, on 11 hits over the complete game. She did not allow a walk and struck out two.

Menlove, Doyle, and Casper each recorded multiple hits in the game.

The Vikings found themselves trailing 11-1 at the end of four innings in their first game of the day against Maryland. Portland State began to mount a comeback with four runs in the top of the fifth, highlighted by a three-run blast by Lindsey.

PSU would not go quietly in the sixth. The Vikings added four more runs to cut the lead all the way down to two and had the tying runs in scoring position. Unfortunately, the final batter of the inning grounded out to end the rally.

Maryland added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to go up by the final 12-9 margin. Lindsey went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a career-high four RBIs in the loss. She hit safely in both games to extend her hitting streak to 13 games.

The Vikings hit the road again next weekend but for the first time this season they won't be going to the state of California. They will head to Nashville, Tenn. for the Tigers Classic hosted by Tennessee State.
