THE OPENING TIP
Momentum is a delicate commodity in sports. The Vikings hope to handle that precious commodity with care this week as they play back-to-back games on the road as part of a four-game road trip.
Portland State (2-3) comes off a convincing road victory at San Jose State on Saturday night, 91-76. It was the first road win of the year, and featured the trademarks of the Viking program as they forced 20 turnovers and grabbed 19 offensive rebounds. PSU's shooting percentage - though modest at .443 from the field - was up from the three previous games, all of which were losses.
The Vikings were particularly impressive playing without starting center
Sal Nuhu (ankle sprain)against a tall SJSU team. Six players scored in double figures, led by a career-high 24 points from SR G
Matt Hauser. JR G Holland "Boo Boo" Woods had 18 points and 11 assists for his fifth career double-double. SR Fs
Rashaad Goolsby and
Alonzo Walker had big games in Nuhu's absence. Goolsby scored 10 points and matched career-highs with 10 rebounds and five steals. Walker scored 13 points with nine rebounds and two blocked shots.
Now the Vikings must bottle that combination of success as they take on Grambling State (2-2) in a neutral site game Tuesday at UC Santa Barbara's Thunderdome. That game will have a noon tip-off. Following on Wednesday, the Vikings will play the host Gauchos of UC Santa Barbara in a 7 p.m. game.
The Grambling State Tigers lost at San Jose State last Wednesday and at Oregon State on Saturday. Earlier wins have come over Ecclesia and Southeastern Louisiana. The Vikings and Tigers will be meeting for the first time in 40 years.
UC Santa Barbara, winners of 45 games over the last two years, has wins over Jackson State and Menlo College this season. Losses have come at UCLA and Oregon State and against Rice. The Gauchos beat the Vikings in a neutral site game last year, 76-69.
All of these match ups are satellite games played on campuses as part of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. PSU wraps up its portion of the LVHC with a Sunday game at Oregon State.

SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE VIKING QUICK NOTES
WHO IS HOT
• PSU has 59 steals, opponents just 17. The Vikings lead the Big Sky in steals (11.8) and rank fifth in the nation.
• SR F
Rashaad Goolsby had a career-high five steals against Portland and followed that with five more steals at San Jose State. Goolsby leads the Big Sky Conference in steals (3.2 pg) and is followed by teammate JR G
Holland Woods (2.8) who ranks second.
• Portland State leads the Big Sky in offensive rebounding (16.0) and turnover margin (+5.8).
• SR G
Matt Hauser scored a career-high 24 points (9-15 FG, 4-9 3-pt, 2-2 FT) with six rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win over San Jose State. His previous career high had been 22 points for Santa Clara in a game against Portland State in 2017 (the Vikings won 87-84).
• With 18 points (6-13 FG, 1-3 3-pt, 5-6 FT) and 11 assists against San Jose State, JR G
Holland Woods had the fifth pts/ast double-double of his career.
• FR G
Kyle Greeley is shooting 60% from the field and 82% at the line.
WHO IS NOT
• SR C

• Portland State has been out-shot by opponents in all three categories (.423/.301/.676). Opponents shoot .463/.360/.717.
• The Vikings are last in scoring defense in the Big Sky Conference (79.0).
BOO BOO ON THE VERGE
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods is on the verge of becoming the number one helper in Viking basketball history. Woods has 384 career assists in 70 games (5.5 pg). That total has him ranked third all-time at PSU. Woods, a junior, is only 37 assists away from the record held by Terry Adolph in 1976-78. Adolph was a prolific assist man in his two-season career at PSU, no doubt benefiting from having the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history playing alongside him in Freeman Williams. Adolph averaged 7.8 assists per game in each of his two seasons, totaling 421 in 54 games. Behind Adolph is teammate Chucky Smith (1974-78, 392 assists) and "modern-era" star Derek Nesland (1996-2000, 371 assists).
As for Woods, at his current pace he would break the Portland State assist mark some time in late December of this season.
Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points in late December. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone (currently 913).
And finally, Woods now has 113 career steals, ranking fifth all-time at PSU. The school record is 128 by Calaen Robinson (2015-17). Woods would be on pace to set that record later this season.
