THE OPENING TIP
The Portland State Men's Basketball team will make its earliest start to a season with its first counting game this Tuesday against the University of Puget Sound. The Vikings officially open their 2019-20 season against the Loggers at the Viking Pavilion at 7:35 p.m. following the PSU women's game.
    Â
The Nov. 5 opener beats the previous earliest start - last season when Portland State traveled to open the season at Oregon on Nov. 6.
    Â
The Vikings figure to be favorites against the NCAA Division III Loggers as they begin a 12-game non-conference schedule. PSU will play four at home, one at a neutral site and seven on the road during the first eight weeks of the season. That should prepare them for Big Sky Conference play as it starts on Dec. 28.
    Â
Portland State Head Coach
Barret Peery begins his third season on the Park Blocks. His team has had a significant makeover since last season, but features returning cornerstone point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods, a second team All-Big Sky Conference performer, and center
Sal Nuhu, who led the Big Sky in blocked shots.
    Â
The Vikings also bring back forward
Rashaad Goolsby and redshirts
Trey Wood and
Kyle Greeley. Eight newcomers fill out the lineup, including five Division I transfers, two junior college transfers and one freshman.
    Â
PSU was 16-16 last season, 11-9 and tied for fourth in the Big Sky Conference. The Vikings were picked to place sixth this season in preseason polls released by the league last week.
    Â
Portland State played an exhibition game last Wednesday, defeating Evergreen State, 103-46. Newcomer
Matt Hauser led the Vikings with 23 points in 22 minutes played, hitting 9-12 from the field, including 5-7 three-point field goals. Woods had 15 points and six assists, while Wood came off the bench for 16 points (7-9 FG/2-3 3-pt). Another newcomer, forward
Alonzo Walker, had a team-high 13 rebounds, while Goolsby came off the bench for 12 boards.
    Â
Portland State takes an eight-game home court winning streak into the season. PSU is playing just its second year in the Viking Pavilion. The Vikings were 12-4 overall at home last season.
    Â
Another streak PSU would like to keep alive is their run against lower division schools. The Vikings have won 35 straight games against lower division schools dating back to 2002. PSU is 47-1 overall against lower division schools since reinstating men's basketball and joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. In addition, the Vikings are 53-10 at home in non-conference games over the last 12 seasons.
    Â
The University of Puget Sound, an NCAA III member of the Northwest Conference, was 12-14 last season, 8-8 in conference play.
    Â
The Viking opener, all home games and Big Sky Conference road games will be live streamed on Pluto TV. You can see the game on Pluto TV Channel 532, www.pluto.tv or www.WatchBigSky.com. Live statistics are available at www.ViksLive.com.
Â
COMING UP
Portland State goes on the road for its next two games - one to an opponent it has never played, and another to one it has not played in 40 years. The Vikings meet Indiana for the first time ever this Saturday at Assembly Hall in Bloomington. PSU will travel to Hawai'i on Nov. 15, meeting the Rainbow Warriors for the first time since 1979.
    Â
The Vikings return home to host a big crosstown rivalry game against the University of Portland on Nov. 20 (7:05 p.m.), seeking a win over the Pilots for the fourth year in a row.

SUSTAINABLE AND RECYCLABLE VIKING QUICK NOTES
WINNING LINES
• Portland State was 16-16 last season, 12-4 at home, 3-10 on the road, 1-2 at neutral sites.
• PSU's 11-9 conference record was its best since going 11-9 in 2013-14. The Vikings were 8-2 at home, 3-7 on the road.
• The Vikings won their last eight in a row at home.
• PSU was 1-1 in overtime.
Home Court(s)
• Portland State opened the Viking Pavilion at the Peter W. Stott Center in 2018-19. The Stoller Family Court is PSU's fifth (and hopefully final) home court since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996-97. Previously, the main home court was the old Peter W. Stott Center. However, the Vikings also used the Rose Garden (now Moda Center) and Memorial Coliseum occasionally over the years. In 2017-18, PSU used Lewis & Clark College's Pamplin Sports Center as a home court while the Viking Pavilion was being completed. Here is the breakdown:
 - Viking Pavilion - 16 games, 12-4
 - Peter W. Stott Center - 233 games, 168-65
 - Rose Garden (Moda Center) - 28 games, 19-9
 - Memorial Coliseum - 19 games, 13-6
 - Lewis and Clark - 12 games, 7-5
 - 23rd season - 308 games, 219-89 at home overall
• Portland State has lost only 10 non-conference home games in the last 12 seasons (53-10). PSU is 28-10 against Division I schools, and 25-0 against lower division schools over that span.
Â
THE 2019-20 SCHEDULE
• In non-conference play, Portland State meets programs from six different major conferences: three against the Big West, three against the WCC and one each against the Big 10, Pac-12, Mountain West and SWAC.
• During non-conference play, the Vikings will meet four teams they faced last season (UC Santa Barbara (N), L, 76-69; Portland Bible (H), W, 123-40; Portland (H), W, 87-78; Loyola Marymount (H), L, 85-58).
• PSU plays two lower division opponents, Puget Sound and Portland Bible. The Vikings are 47-1 against lower division schools since joining the Big Sky Conference in 1996, including winning 34 in a row.
• Big Sky Conference play consists of a 20-game conference schedule. The quirk of the 2019-20 conference schedule is that Portland State will be the "lone wolf" among the 11 Big Sky teams, meaning it will not have a travel partner. The result is a slightly different schedule than normal which includes five Monday games (three at home), two stretches of seven days off and one stretch of eight days off.
• In all Portland State plays 14 counting home games and 18 road games.
• The Big Sky Conference Tournament takes place Mar. 11-14 at CenturyLink Arena in Boise. The bottom six seeds will compete in first-round play on Wednesday. The top five seeds will earn quarterfinal round berths and open play on Thursday. Semifinals are on Friday, with the Championship on Saturday. The winner advances to the NCAA Tournament.

BOO BOO ON THE VERGE
Portland State point guard Holland "Boo Boo" Woods is on the verge of becoming the number one helper in Viking basketball history. Woods has 356 career assists in 65 games (5.5 pg). That total has him ranked fourth all-time at PSU. Woods, a junior, begins his third season on the Park Blocks only 65 assists away from the record held by Terry Adolph in 1976-78. Adolph was a prolific assist man in his two-season career at PSU, no doubt benefiting from having the second all-time leading scorer in NCAA history playing alongside him in Freeman Williams. Adolph averaged 7.8 assists per game in each of his two seasons, totaling 421 in 54 games. Behind Adolph is teammate Chucky Smith (1974-78, 392 assists) and "modern-era" star Derek Nesland (1996-2000, 371 assists).
    Â
As for Woods, at his current pace he would break the Portland State assist mark some time in late December of this season.
    Â
Woods is also on pace to reach 1,000 career points in late December. He would be the 19th Viking in history to reach that milestone.
    Â
And finally, Woods has 99 career steals. He is on the doorstep of being the eighth Viking all-time with 100 steals. The school record is 128 by Calaen Robinson (2015-17). Woods would be on pace to set that record later this season.
