PORTLAND – The Portland State women's soccer team couldn't get the win on senior day, falling to Idaho 1-0 at Hillsboro Stadium, but the Vikings did have something to celebrate as they clinched the final spot in the Big Sky Soccer Championship.
The Vikings will enter the tournament as the 6
th-seed and will wait for the final outcomes of the remaining matches to determine their opponent. This is the second time in three years Portland State advanced to the tournament and the 13
th-time in program history.
Prior to Sunday's match, the Viking honored three seniors in
Ellie Schmid,
Liv Jillings, and
Regan Russell.
Idaho applied some early pressure in the opening half, notching two early shots, one of which ended in a save by PSU keeper
Enya Hernandez.
Rilee Castilla tried to get the offense going, collecting back-to-back shots with no luck before
Sienna Higinbotham added another shot that landed in the hands of Idaho's goalie. The Vikings finished with seven first-half shots as the teams headed into the break-even at 0-0.
The Vandals kept their offense going in the second period, outshooting the Vikings 9-5 as both teams finished even in shots with 12 and five shots on goal.
In the 75
th minute, Idaho finally broke the tie, scoring off a header from a corner kick for the game-winner.
Castilla finished with four shots to lead the Vikings while Higinbotham and
Sofi Papastamos each added two shots. Hernandez collected four saves as she finishes with 92 total saves during the regular season.
The Big Sky tournament will be held in Greeley, Colo., and hosted by Northern Colorado. The quarterfinals are scheduled to begin on Nov. 6 with the semifinals Nov. 8 and the Championship on Nov. 10.
