Vikings Exit Big Sky Tournament in Loss to #3 Eastern Washington

GREELEY, Colo. – The Portland State women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday in the quarterfinal round of the Big Sky Conference Soccer Championships, losing to third-seeded Eastern Washington 3-0 at Jackson Stadium.

The Vikings (4-15-0) opened the match with an early shot attempt in the first minute as Sienna Higinbotham sent a shot to the corner of the net before EWU's Kelsee Winston pushed the ball out for a PSU corner.

After that, Eastern Washington (10-7-2) rattled off the next six shot attempts but couldn't get past Vikings keeper Enya Hernandez who recorded four saves in the first half.

Portland State tallied two shots in the opening period, both landing on goal. Rilee Castilla nearly scored in the 36th minute, collecting a pass inside the box before hitting a shot to the right side of the net, ending in a diving save by Winston.

With neither team finding the back of the net, the Vikings and Eagles entered the break in a scoreless tie.

Portland State opened the second half much like the first, collecting an early shot attempt on goal, this time by Natalia Blanco.

Eastern Washington finally broke the tie in the 55th minute, as Sariah Keister hit a shot from right to left, sliding under the arms Hernandez for what would turn out to be the game-winner.

Tasi Poore nearly tied the match in the 62nd, stealing the ball at midfield before driving into the box and hitting a shot just inside the reach of EWU's keeper who dove to stop the ball.

The Eagles added to their lead, scoring back-to-back goals in a two-minute span to take a 3-0 advantage.

Portland State tallied five shots, all landing on goal, while Eastern Washington finished with 15 shots and nine on target. Castilla led the Vikings with two shots while Hernandez tallied six saves, finishing the season with a total of 98 saves in her freshman year.

The Vikings fall in the Big Sky tournament for the second time in three seasons to Eastern Washington, who won 2-1 in the semifinals in 2017.
