Andrea Martinez Joins Vikings Ahead of 2018-19 Season

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland State women's basketball team will have a distinctly Spanish flair next season as Andrea Martinez joins Ana Tainta to give the Vikings two freshmen from Spain for the upcoming 2018-19 season.

Martinez joins the Vikings after participating at the U18 Spanish National Team training camp this summer. Martinez has also compiled a decorated club career while playing for a variety of teams in Spain.

"We are excited to add Andrea to our team," head coach Lynn Kennedy said of Martinez's signing. "She gives our team some valuable experience as she has played at the highest level in Spain. She is athletic, long and can run the floor and will add depth at our stretch 4 position."

Martinez won the Basketball Valencia Challenge with her Rivas P.S. team in 2018. Martinez and Rivas P.S. also placed second at the International Junior Stars Cup in 2018, and placed third at the Madrid Championship.

Martinez recorded a pair of second-place finishes with the Rivas Ecópolis team in 2017, finishing runners-up at the Madrid Championship and Basketball Valencia Challenge. Martinez and Rivas Ecópolis won the Madrid Championship in 2016.

Martinez made her debut in the Liga Femenina 2 – the second division of women's basketball in Spain – with Rivas Ecópolis in 2016. Additionally, Martinez placed ninth in the Spanish National Championship with Rivas Ecópolis in 2016 and 2017.
