Vikings Drop Doubleheader at No. 5 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – The Vikings suffered a pair of tough losses to in-state rival No. 5 Oregon Tuesday night in Eugene, Ore. Portland State dropped the opening game of the doubleheader, 8-2, before falling 3-0 in game two.  
 
Oregon took an early 4-0 lead after plating four runs in the bottom of the second inning off Portland State's starting pitcher. FR RHP Haley Schimmel came on in relief and got out of the second without giving up any more runs. Oregon added a run in the third and one more in the fourth to go up 6-0 at the end of four.
 
After a scoreless fifth, the Vikings broke through on the scoreboard. With two outs in the top of the sixth, Darian Lindsey double down the right field line. Kaela Morrow then walked before being lifted for pinch runner Ashlyn Monroe. Rachel Menlove then doubled to deep right-center to drive in both Lindsey and Monroe to make it 6-2.
 
Oregon came back with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the game 8-2.
 
Emma Detamore started game two for the Vikings and threw four scoreless innings against one of the top hitting teams in the country. Oregon broke the scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Oregon added two more in the bottom of the sixth to go up 3-0.
 
Oregon's Miranda Elish came into the game two 11-1 on the season with an 0.93 earned run average. She threw the first-ever seven-inning perfect game in Oregon history, while tallying a career-high 16 strikeouts.
 
NOTES: Tayler Gunesch extended her career-high hitting streak to 19 games with a single up the middle to lead off game one. She did not play in game two … Portland State hits the road this weekend for a three-game series at Sacramento State.
