Burk, Lindsey Lead Vikings to Series Win over Grizzlies

MISSOULA, Mont. – The Vikings held on for a 3-2 win to take the series from the Montana Grizzlies Saturday afternoon in Missoula, Mont. It is the Vikings' third Big Sky Conference series win of the year.

Just two batters into the game, SO IF Darian Lindsey got the Vikings on the scoreboard with a solo home run to center field, her fourth of the year and first in conference play. Lindsey leads the Vikings with a .395 batting average and a 1.081 OPS (on base + slugging) in league play.

JR RHP Alyssa Burk posted her eighth complete game in 10 Big Sky starts to win Sunday's series finale. She allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. She walked four and struck out three.

Burk worked around a pair of base runners in the first inning before throwing a perfect second. Montana (22-24 overall, 7-8 BSC) tied the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 1-1.

Portland State (14-30, 7-7) came right back to take the lead with an unearned run of its own in the top of the fourth. Lindsey reached on a throwing error to start the inning before being advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Kaela Morrow. Rachel Menlove singled to right to drive in Lindsey from second.

The Vikings added what would turn out to be a much-needed insurance run in the top of the fifth. With a runner on first and two outs, Marissa Bruno tripled to right center to drive in Jessica Flanagan all the way from first to go up 3-1.

Portland State missed a golden opportunity to plate another run in the top of the sixth. The Vikings had runners on the corners and one out but a pair of fly outs ended the scoring threat.

Montana pulled within one with a run in the bottom of the sixth. A walk and a hit batter put two on with nobody out. A single to left drove in a run. After a pop out to first recorded the first out of the inning, the next batter dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Burk got out of the inning with a ground out to Lindsey at short to maintain the one-run lead.

The lead remained one heading to the home half of the seventh. The Grizzlies had the tying run at second with two outs following a sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Montana's best hitter, a pitch got away from Burk and another hit batter loaded the bases. Burk ended the game by inducing a fly out to left field secure her 10th win of the season, seventh in league play.

Lindsey went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and a run driven in on her solo home run. Menlove went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Burk became the first Vikings since Anna Bertrand in 2013 to reach the double-digit win mark. She is 10-11 with a 3.38 earned run average overall this season and is 7-3 with a 1.99 ERA in league play.

Portland State returns home next week for its final home games of the 2018 season. The Vikings host conference-leading Weber State for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, April 27 at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex. Saturday's series finale will be senior day for Portland State with first pitch slated for 12 p.m. PT.
