Win at No. 1 doubles Not Enough in 7-0 Loss to Pilots

PORTLAND, Ore. —
Playing the defending WCC regular-season champions on their home court where they haven't lost in 20 matches is a tough ask. But that's exactly what was asked of the Portland State men's tennis team against cross-town rival University of Portland Saturday, and the Vikings couldn't pull off the miracle upset in a 7-0 loss to the Pilots at the Louisiana Pacific Tennis Center.

The 7-0 score line hid some of the successes for the Vikings (2-2) in the dual, however, none bigger than the Vikings' win at No. 1 doubles. Sophomore Tommy Edwards and junior newcomers Avery West beat UP's Mike Pervolarakis and Alex Wallace 7-5 at No. 1 doubles for their third win in four matches this season.

Pervolarakis and Wallace's only other loss in doubles this season came against Old Dominion's No. 1 team that came into the match ranked 22nd nationally by the ITA in doubles. Additionally, Pervolarakis came into Saturday's match as the 18th-ranked singles player nationally, and was named the 2017 WCC Player of the Year.

West won the first set of his match at No. 3 singles, too, running out to an early lead against UP's Pierre Garcia. Garcia bounced back for a 6-1 win in the second set, however, and then closed out the match with a 6-3 win in the third and final set.

Freshman Sam Roberts also took a set off UP's Carlos Donat at line four, where he came back after losing the first set, 6-4, to win the second set, 6-3. Roberts pushed Donat in the ensuing 10-point match tiebreaker, too, but Donat narrowly pulled out the win, 10-8.

Edwards and senior Nathan Boniel also each played close matches at the top two lines in the Vikings' singles lineup. Boniel faced Pervolarakis for the fourth time in his career at line one, and played a close first set against the 2017 ITA Northwest Regional champion before falling, 7-5. Pervolarakis then got out strong in the second set, and put Boniel away for a 7-5, 6-3 win at line one.

Edwards rebounded after falling behind early to UP's Mathieu Garcia at line two, meanwhile, and played a close match before falling 6-4, 6-3.

The Vikings can quickly get back in the win column, as they host NCAA Division III Linfield at 6 p.m. later in the day Saturday at St. Johns Racquet Center in Portland, Ore.
