Portland, OR – Although not the "official" opening game for the new Viking Pavilion, Head Coach Barret Peery's crew broke in the new basketball arena at Portland State with a 119-89 exhibition victory over Multnomah.
Â
The NAIA team from northeast Portland put on an eye-opening performance, shooting 59 three-pointers among their 74 shot attempts against the Vikings. The Lions made 21 (.356), which was just enough to keep the Vikings on their toes.
Â
"That was an awkward game; no centers," said Peery, referring to the smaller, but strong-shooting opponent. "Give them a lot of credit. They shot the heck out of the ball, which kept them in that 20-point range and made us really have to keep guarding. I thought our guys adjusted and played well."
Â
As expected, Portland State set the tempo right away with its full-court pressure. The Vikings grabbed the lead early and didn't look back. But the Lions made just enough three-point field goals to make it interesting.
Â
Of Multnomah's 40 first-half shot attempts, 32 were three-pointers. The Lions made 10, but trailed PSU 57-39 at halftime.
Â
The Vikings superior size also made a difference as they had a 37-22 rebounding edge at the half. Brendan Rumel had a dozen points inside while Deante Strickland hit three treys and had 11 points from the outside.
Â
When the Lions hit four quick three-pointers out of the halftime locker room they had cut the Viking lead to 62-51. Portland State eventually got the lead up over 20 and were able to keep it there.
Â
Six players scored in double figures for PSU, with 18 points apiece from Holland Woods, Michael Nuga and Strickland. Jamie Orme had a double-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Nuga added 11 rebounds to go with his 18 points in 18 minutes. Woods also had eight assists and four steals.
Â
"I thought it was a good game for us," said Peery. "The biggest thing was just getting guys out on the floor for the first time. I thought we had guys that were nervous, anticipating the excitement of the whole thing, so it was just good to get a game under our belt."
Â
Portland State was strong in its two major points of emphasis: forcing turnovers and offensive rebounds. The Vikings turned the Lions over 21 times for 26 points. They also grabbed 25 offensive rebounds and scored 26 second chance points.
Â
PSU shot 44-100 from the field, hit 9-29 three-pointers (.310) and 22-28 free throws (.786). The Vikings won the battle on the glass, 67-39.
Â
Justin Martin scored 31 points and had eight assists for Multnomah. He made 9-23 three-point attempts and 11-26 shots overall. Ben Grandle added 17 points and 15 rebounds.
