Eugene, OR – Portland State's shooting touch couldn't match its intensity against 14
th-ranked Oregon, and the result was a season-opening loss for the Vikings, 84-57, at Matthew Knight Arena.

The Vikings took 23 more shots than the Ducks, but managed to hit only .288 from the field. The poor shooting minimized a Viking advantage on the glass (41-38), and in forcing turnovers (14 by the Ducks, 11 by the Vikings).

At 0-1, Portland State now looks ahead to its home opener at the Viking Pavilion on Saturday night against UC Riverside. The Highlanders were losers at Oregon State on Tuesday.

Michael Nuga's two early three-pointers staked the Vikings to an 11-9 lead and it remained close through the first 10 minutes. But, Portland State missed seven straight shots midway through the first half and the Ducks took advantage with a 14-1 run. PSU went down 38-23 with 5:10 left in the half.

Oregon maintained that lead into halftime and was up 45-29 at the break. PSU was simply outshot, making 11-34 from the field (32%) compared to 16-26 for the Ducks (62%).

Ducks point guard Payton Pritchard took on the Viking press throughout the half, putting up 18 points and handing off three assists, but also had four turnovers. He made 5-6 from the field and 7-7 at the line.
Holland Woods had 10 points and two assists at the half for the Vikings.

Portland State was only 10-39 shooting in the second half and could get no closer than 11 points. The Ducks rolled to the win, their seventh straight time in the series against the Vikings.

Overall, Oregon shot 27-50 from the field (.540) and 26-33 at the line (.788). The Vikings were 21-73 (.288) and only 5-35 from three-point range (.143).

"I thought we did some really good things in the stat line and got some excellent looks but just couldn't knock them down at crucial times," said Viking Coach
Barret Peery. "I thought the team was focused and ready to go, but when it was time to step up and hit shots we just didn't do a very good job of that.

"It was one of those nights. I think our guys competed, the hustle numbers were there, but we have got to hit shots.

Woods led the Vikings with 13 points and three assists.
Jamie Orme added 11 points and five rebounds.

Pritchard had 22 points to lead the Ducks. Paul White added 15. Bol Bol scored 12 points with 12 rebounds.

Derek Brown had a team-high seven rebounds for the Vikings. Oregon leads the all-time series 13-2.
