Season on the Line Sunday After 1-0 Loss

Portland State entered Friday's match with Montana two points ahead in the standings and in control of its own destiny. After 90 minutes, the Vikings left Hillsboro Stadium missing their fifth-year goalkeeper for the rest of the regular season and looking up at the Grizzlies for one of the final postseason spots.

Captain and starting goalkeeper Abbie Faingold received a red card in the 57th minute, forcing Portland State to play the rest of the match a player down. Tiegan Horton entered, playing the first minutes of her Portland State career. It was the first minute that Faingold had missed in a Viking game since October of 2016.

Montana took advantage of the absence, scoring the lone goal of the match in the 70th minute for the crucial 1-0 road win. Montana jumped Portland State in the standings, knocking the Vikings into sixth place. Eastern Washington is two points behind Portland State in the standings and plays against Northern Arizona on Friday night with a chance to knock the Vikings out of a postseason position.

The Grizzlies came into the match aggressively, earning four corner kicks in the first five and a half minutes. The Vikings answered back quickly and nearly got on the board in the eighth minute. Krystal de Ramos made a long run up the right wing and attempted a shot from just inside the box, but Montana goalkeeper Claire Howard made a save in the one-on-one situation.

Montana kept a lot of the possession in the first half and had seven corners in the opening 16 minutes. Still, the Vikings withstood the attack and created chances of their own. Morgan Matthews fired a half-volley from over 30 yards out that nearly beat Howard in the 19th minute.

By halftime neither team had scored, but Faingold had made five saves, effectively limiting the Montana offense that entered the match with just eight goals on the season.

Co-captain Ellie Vasey broke away from a couple Griz defenders to start the second half but once again Howard got the best of the one-on-one situation, knocking the ball down. The impressive keeper battle continued just one minute later. This time it was Faingold showing off the skills, rising up and batting away a shot from Montana's Kennedy Yost.

The 56th minute changed the entire match, and potentially season, for the Vikings. McKenzie Warren made a well-timed run to sneak behind the Portland State defense. Faingold came out of her box to try to make a play on the ball, but Warren touched the ball past her. Faingold collided with Warren, knocking her to the ground and ending the goal chance. She was shown a direct red card and was ejected from the game. She will also be suspended for Senior Day against Northern Colorado this Sunday.

Horton entered, and made a couple saves over the final half hour, but Alexa Coyle found the game-winner in the 70th minute. A pass was misplayed by a Portland State defender and ended up at the feet of Coyle just outside the six-yard box, where she calmly slid it to the left of Horton and into the back of the net.

The Vikings, playing a man down, couldn't muster enough quality chances at goal and were shutout for just the third time in Big Sky play.

Now, Portland State's season is on the line Sunday. The Vikings could win and still miss the Big Sky Tournament, pending results elsewhere in the conference. Eastern Washington still has two matches left, one tonight against Northern Arizona and another on Sunday against Southern Utah.

The Grizzlies, now ahead of PSU in the table, finish their regular season on Sunday at Sacramento State.

Not all is lost for the Vikings, but the pressure of Senior Day just got amped up a couple of levels. Northern Colorado is currently 5-2 in conference play and will take on Sacramento State Friday evening. A regular season championship and a first-round bye will still be on the table for the Bears who will bring the best offense in the conference to Hillsboro on Sunday.

Senior Day festivities will begin 16 minutes prior to kickoff. The Vikings will honor Abbie Faingold, Krystal de Ramos, Jacky Huchler, Morgan Matthews and Tiegan Horton before the start of the match.
