Krystal de Ramos scored an equalizer that helped Portland State get a draw on Senior Day, but the 1-1 result wasn't enough to extend the season and qualify the Vikings for the Big Sky Tournament.
The Vikings entered the day one point behind Eastern Washington and Montana on the table, meaning they needed help from one of the two teams to make the tournament. The help didn't come, as both the Grizzlies and Eagles won their respective matches earlier Sunday afternoon to officially eliminate the Vikings from postseason contention.
"The girls battled today from start to finish," head coach
Katie Burton said. "It started with the efforts of our seniors. Our team rallied behind them to try and send them off with a bang. It wasn't the result we wanted, but it was the full 90 minute game we've been looking for."
While the season officially ended Sunday, it was Friday's result that sealed the Vikings fate. A 1-0 loss to Montana put the Grizzlies ahead of the Vikings in the standings and left the work to be done on Senior Day.
After Abbie Faingold received a red card in the Montana match, Tiegan Horton was forced into action against a Northern Colorado team that had scored 33 goals on the season entering the match. Horton and the Vikings defense did well to limit the best offense in the conference, allowing just a single goal.
"Tiegan was fantastic," Burton said. "It was tough for Abbie to have to sit her senior game, but gave Tiegan the opportunity to start and play her last game. She was such a big presence in goal today."
The goal came early for Northern Colorado. The Bears had nice build-up play that led to a cross and one-timed goal in the 13th minute. It was the first shot of the game for either team and significantly hurt Portland State's playoff chances.
The Vikings answered back well and were extremely unlucky not to find an equalizer in the opening half. Their first good chance came in the 19th minute, when Morgan Matthews had a skillful touch turned away by Northern Colorado's Taylor Washington.
On the following corner kick, two chances went unrewarded for the Vikings. Matthews headed the corner toward the near post, where Rilee Castilla headed it goalward. Castilla's shot hit the crossbar and deflected back into the mess of players inside the box. Krystal de Ramos fired off a quick shot that was deflected away, and the Vikings remained scoreless.
The Vikings entered the halftime break trailing by a goal, but it was during the break that the final fate was sealed. Montana beat Sacramento State and Eastern Washington scored a couple of late goals to defeat Southern Utah, both games ending during Portland State's halftime break.
Portland State continued to fight and it was one of the seniors that finally got the breakthrough. Tea Poore swung in a cross that Sofi Papastamos headed toward the back post. Krystal de Ramos was waiting, took one touch and beat Northern Colorado's goalkeeper to tie the match.
De Ramos nearly scored again 15 minutes later, but her shot to the top corner was saved.
Horton made the biggest play of the match just one minute later. The Bears got the ball into the box and headed a shot goalwards. Horton moved into perfect position and jumped up to make the save and keep the match level.
The two sides couldn't be separated in regulation time. Matthews nearly scored a game winner nine minutes into the first overtime period, but she couldn't get enough power on the shot and Washington made a save. The two sides played an even rest of the match, and Portland State's season came to end with its first draw.
Northern Colorado outshot Portland State 18-13, but the Vikings put more attempts on goal in the match. It was the fourth goal of the season for de Ramos, who ends her Portland State career with nine scores. Horton made four saves in her first career start.
The Vikings season comes to an end with a final record of 5-10-1 and a 3-5-1 record in the Big Sky. Portland State finished 7th in the Big Sky, one place out of qualifying for the Big Sky Tournament.
"Overall the season was a compilation of learning moments," Burton said. "Sometimes you need a tough year like this with close losses and adversity to really bring a team together. It creates a group that battles for and with each other. Regardless of the outcome, it was still a season with tremendous progress that has helped further what we are striving to build in this program. We had an awesome group of seniors that laid the ground work for the future."
