Vikings Avenge Two Close Losses to Seattle in 2017 with 5-2 Win over Redhawks

VANCOUVER, Wash. —
Sweet revenge.

A pair of 4-3 losses to Seattle last season fueled the Portland State men's tennis team in its rematch against the Redhawks Saturday, and the Vikings got their vengeance with a 5-2 win over Seattle at Club Green Meadows.

The last three matches between the Vikings (2-1) and Redhawks (0-1) had all been decided by 4-3 scores, but Saturday's match was never that close. The Vikings won two of the three doubles matches to win the doubles point, and then followed with wins in four of the six singles matches.

"This was a great win for us," head coach Toby Krauel said after the match. "It was a total team effort. We had amazing team cohesiveness, and the guys all showed great fight and determination."

Nathan Boniel and Avery West swept their singles and doubles matches for the Vikings, while Sam Roberts and Otto Holtari added wins at No. 4 and 6 singles, respectively.

Boniel only dropped four games combined while beating Seattle's Arshak Ghazaryan 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, and also beat Ghazaryan and Michael Schoettler in doubles, winning 6-4 at line three with partner Gabe Souza.

West lost just one more game than Boniel in singles, beating Seattle's Emilio Monroy 6-2, 6-3 at line three for a win that clinched the dual for the Vikings. West lost to Monroy in straight sets at the Dar Walters Fall Classic during the fall season, but completely flipped the script Saturday.

West also won his second straight match at No. 1 doubles with partner Tommy Edwards, as the pair beat Seattle's Trenton Nield and Colton Weldreyer, 6-4.

Roberts posted the same score line as Boniel in his match against Seattle's Michael Schoettler at line four – 6-1, 6-3 – and was the first Viking off the court in singles for the second straight match.

Holtari added a fifth point for the Vikings with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Seattle's Matt Alderson.

The Vikings return to action for two matches next Saturday, with a road match against cross-town rival University of Portland at 12 p.m., followed by a home match against Linfield at 6 p.m. The Vikings will host Linfield at St. Johns Racquet Center in Portland, Ore.
