For a Viking team that needs to get better in 2017, the defense is a good starting point and Head Coach Bruce Barnum is happy with what he sees so far.
"We've simplified things for them, and they aren't thinking (on the field), they are just playing," said Barnum, who paraphrases the "read and react" mentality every coach wants for his defense.
"They have a long way to go. They are facing a pretty talented offense in practice and have stifled them up to a few days ago when the offense started catching up," said Barnum.
"I like how they are playing and communicating. They are playing as one. I don't think we have any superstars over there. Our d-line is better, our linebackers are better, our corners are going to be the first ones off the bus. They are talented and they are good looking athletes."
The main concern for Barnum is getting his young team experience. "We need to play. We are trying to get in as many reps as we can (in preseason camp). Everybody is in the same boat, because nobody can have two-a-days now, but it does take a lot of reps away when you have young guys. That is my concern right now. Do we have enough reps to make sure we are reacting and not thinking too much?"
One thing is certain about this year's group; they have an edge. As can often happen after two weeks of going head-to-head, preseason practice has gotten a little chippy between the offense and defense.
"We've only let them go live once," said Barnum. "In this game, if I have been holding you off all of camp except one day, that can get a little frustrating, especially for a defense."
The team will have another chance to go live this Wednesday as it has its second, and final, extensive scrimmage of preseason camp. The Vikings will likely run between 60-70 plays as the coaching staff takes a hard look and refines its depth. This week's scrimmage will have the added feature of referees and a play clock.
"We are trying to put them in scenarios that will come up in games, so when we get to them in games, we won't be surprised," said Barnum.
Wednesday's practice begins at 8 a.m. The live portion will begin between 8:30-8:45.Â
