Seniors Shine on Senior Day but Fall to Hornets

HILLSBORO, Ore. – All five Portland State seniors had a hit but the Vikings fell to the Sacramento State Hornets, 4-2, in their final game of the season Saturday afternoon at Gordon Faber Recreation Complex in Hillsboro, Ore.

Portland State (9-36 overall, 7-14 Big Sky Conference) outhit Sacramento State (20-26-1, 10-10) 9-to-6 in the game and had ample opportunities to knock in the tying or even go-ahead run but were unable to pick up that critical hit with runners in scoring position. They went 4-for-11 in such situations and left eight runners on base for the game.

Sophomore RHP Alyssa Burk threw her eighth straight complete game to close out the season for the Vikings. She gave up four runs, three earned, on six hits. She walked five, two coming as unintentional intentional walks as she pitched around Sacramento State's Suzy Brookshire, and struck out three.

After stranding a runner in the first, Kaela Morrow led off the bottom of the second with a walk. She moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior OF Jenna Stanford laced a single to center field but she hit it too hard and Morrow was only able to advance to third. Stanford moved to second on a wild pitch and the Vikings had two runners in scoring position. The next two batters hit the ball hard but right at defenders and the Vikings stranded two more.

Burk stranded a runner in each of the first three innings. She was not so lucky in the fourth. The Hornets had two runners on via a hit and a walk with two outs. The next batter turned on a good inside pitch from Burk and hit it over the right field fence to give Sacramento State a 3-0 lead.

Sacramento State led off the top of the fifth with a double. The runner stole third putting a runner 60-feet away with nobody out. Brookshire hit a hot shot to senior Shae Nelson at third base. She went down to her knees to get the ball right next to the bag, reached out and tagged the runner off the base for the first out and then threw Brookshire out at first for the Vikings' third double play of the series.

Portland State picked up a run in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 3-1 game. Freshman Korina Krueg led off the inning with a double off the base of the fence down the left field line. Senior SheaLee Lindsey dropped down a bunt single and then stole second to put two in scoring position. Nelson loaded the bases with an infield single. Senior Celena Carrisosa hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which drove in the Vikings' first run of the game.

The Hornets picked up an unearned run in the top of the sixth to make it a 4-1 game.

Morrow doubled off the fence in right field to lead off the bottom of the sixth. She moved to third on an infield single to third by junior Kortney Craker. On the play, the Hornets' third baseman threw wide of first, which allowed Morrow to come around to score. The Vikings got another base runner but stranded two in the sixth.

Burk worked around a two-out walk in the top of the seventh to send the game into the bottom half. The Vikings went in order to fall by the final score of 4-2.

Sacramento State's Taylor Tessier picked up the win, allowing one earned run on four hits over four innings. Danielle Sperry threw the final three innings to earn the save.
