Viking Football Notes: Kuresa Makes Watch List, Firehouse Banner and More...


The Portland State Vikings football team will get a much-needed day off after Wednesday night's final full scrimmage of fall camp. The coaching staff will spend the day refining its depth chart and begin game preparation for the season opener on Sept. 3 against Central Washington. 

Meanwhile, here are a few Viking football notes for a quiet day on the Park Blocks.

KURESA NAMED TO CFPA PERFORMER OF THE YEAR WATCH LIST
Portland State quarterback Alex Kuresa is listed as one of 40 players on the College Football Performance Awards Performer of the Year Watch List. Kuresa, the Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2015, will lead the Vikings again in 2016. He is one of four players from the Big Sky Conference on the list. Portland State players have had success with CFPA Awards before. Linebacker Ian Sluss was named Linebacker of the Year in 2012. Punter Kyle Loomis was selected as Punter of the Year in 2013. BARNUM PRESENTS PORTLAND FIRE AND RESCUE WITH BANNER
Portland State Head Football Coach Bruce Barnum presented Portland Fire and Rescue station four with a new Viking Athletics banner on Tuesday (SEE THE VIDEO). The banner replaces the old Viking logo banner that has been hanging proudly over station four's two engines. Station four is located on the PSU campus at the corner of 5th and College. Included among the firefighters stationed there are former Viking football players Brad Ransom and Jordan Brown and former women's basketball player Katia Hadj-Hamou.

Portland State's opening game will be Celebrate Service Day, recognizing public service and military personnel. Active and former police, fire and military personnel get in free. Additional tickets for family and friends are $5-$10.

OPENING GAME WILL AIR ON KEX 1190
Due to a scheduling conflict with the Hillsboro Hops baseball team, Portland State's opening game will air on KEX 1190 AM in the Portland area. The game can also be heard online at www.KEX1190.iheart.com. Kickoff for the Vikings and Central Washington is 2:30 p.m. The pregame show begins at 1:30.

VIKING FOOTBALL LUNCHEONS
Portland State Athletics will host the Viking Football Luncheon once again this season at the Old Spaghetti Factory. Every Friday of a home football week (Sept. 2, Sept. 30, Oct. 14, Oct. 28 and Thursday, Nov. 17), Portland State will host a football luncheon at noon at the Old Spaghetti Factory located at 0715 SW Bancroft. Coach Barnum and Viking players will speak and be available for questions. The luncheon is open to the public and costs $12.
