CLOVIS, Calif. - Portland State freshman
ChaQuinn Cook is the real deal. After a collegiate season that saw her win Big Sky titles in the indoor and outdoor triple jump titles, Cook added to her accolades with a third-place finish in the triple jump at the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships Sunday.
Cook placed third after setting a new personal best with a jump of 42-00.75 (12.82m) on her final attempt of the day. Cook's mark beat her Big Sky title-winning mark of 41-02.50 (12.56m) by over 10 inches, and moved her within four inches of Gayle Imran-Sideris' school record of 42-04.75 (12.92m). Additionally, Cook's third-place finish placed her ahead of athletes from Texas, Ohio State, Kansas and Texas A&M.
Cok will not compete at the IAAF U20 Championships despite her third-place finish, however. Cook needed to finish in the top two to make the meet, and would also have needed to to finish with a mark better than 13 meters.
