RECAPS - DAY 1 | DAY 2
LAWRENCE, Kan. — The Portland State track & field team closed its portion of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds with three more athletes in competition Saturday, all of whom beat their rankings going into the meet but failed to advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Â
The Vikings beat their ranking in all six events in which they competed at the regional meet, but did not advance an athlete to the national meet, ending their collegiate season.
Â
Junior
Akayla Anderson opened the day for the Vikings, as she finished the 100-meter hurdles 41st overall in 13.92 seconds. Anderson, who was nowhere near qualifying for the NCAA west regional meet before winning the Big Sky title in the 100-meter hurdles, entered the meet ranked 46th in the NCAA west, but beat that with her performance Saturday.
Â
Junior
Genna Settle, meanwhile, beat her ranking in the 200 meters, a day after she also finished higher than her ranking with a 24th-place finish in the 100 meters. Settle finished the 200 32nd overall in 23.87 seconds, tying her second-best finish in the 200 meters as a Viking.
Â
Freshman
ChaQuinn Cook also finished higher than her west ranking in the triple jump, as she placed 24th overall with a mark of 41-02.25 (12.55m). Cook's mark stood just a quarter of an inch short of the personal best of 41-02.50 (12.56m) she set in winning the triple jump at the Big Sky Championships two weeks ago.
Â
Cook will now turn her attention to the USATF Junior Outdoor Championships, which she qualified for with her mark at the Big Sky Championships. Cook will compete at the junior national meet in Clovis, Calif., June 24-26.
