Vikings Drop Finale, Take Series From UND

HILLSBORO, Ore. – After clinching the series with a doubleheader sweep Friday, the Vikings dropped the series finale, 9-3, to North Dakota Saturday afternoon at the Gordon Faber Recreation Complex in Hillsboro, Ore.

Senior OF Brianna Celaya continued her hot hitting with a single and a double Saturday. She finished the series hitting .700, going 7-for-10, with five runs scored, three doubles, a home run, and six runs batted in.

The Vikings jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. They left two runners in scoring position in the first and one more in the second, those runners left on base would come back to hurt the Vikings later in the game.

Despite the runners left on base, the Vikings increased their lead to 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the third.

Portland State starting pitcher Alyssa Burk threw three shutout innings to start the game before running into trouble in the fourth. She gave up an unearned run in the top of the fourth to make it a 3-1 game. She got out of a bases loaded jam with back-to-back fielder's choice outs.

Burk could not get out of it in the top of the fifth as the Fighting Hawks plated five runs, four earned, to take their first lead of the series, 6-3. They added three more runs in the top of the sixth to make it a 9-3 game.

Portland State could not counter after either of North Dakota's big innings as the Vikings headed to the bottom of the seventh down by six. They got a one-out single off the bat of Ashley Smith but that would be it as they fell by the final 9-3 score.

Smith had a pair of hits in the game as did SheaLee Lindsey to go along with Celaya's day.

Karyn Wright came on in relief of Burk in a tied game and allowed four runs, all earned, and was tabbed with the loss. She fell to 3-5 on the season.

North Dakota's Kaylin VanDomelen allowed three earned runs on nine hits to earn the complete-game win. She improved to 9-13 on the season.

North Dakota picked up its first Big Sky Conference win of the season to improve to 12-26 overall and 1-6 in league play. Portland State fell to 11-21 and 5-4 with the loss.

The Vikings head to Corvallis, Ore. for single game on Tuesday, April 12 against the Oregon State Beavers. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. PT.
