EUGENE, Ore. — Triple jumpers
Ta'mara Richey and
D'nara Jones led the Portland State track and field teams as they closed their regular season at the Oregon Twilight meet Friday with a pair of personal bests in the event at Hayward Field.
Â
Richey and Jones finished second and third, respectively, in the triple jump Friday, with Richey passing Jones for second with a huge personal best on her last attempt of the day. Richey jumped 39-06.00 (12.04m) at the meet, nearly a full foot over her prep personal best in the event, and exactly a foot longer than her previous best this season, which she set at 38-06.00 (11.73m) at the Stanford Invitational over a month ago.
Â
Jones, meanwhile, held second place until Richey's final attempt, as she moved up the standings with another huge personal best. Jones jumped 38-02.00 (11.63m) on her third attempt of the day, over a foot longer than her previous best of 36-11.00 (11.25m), which she set at the John Knight Twilight meet on April 10.
Â
Richey and Jones now rank next to each other in the Portland State record book after their marks Friday, as Richey stays at seventh in the triple jump despite improving her mark, while Jones moves up to eighth. Additionally, Richey remains third in the Big Sky in the triple jump after Friday, though she moved closer to Big Sky leaders Morena Mannucci of Eastern Washington and Brianna Cole of Sacramento State. Jones also moves up to seventh in the Big Sky this season with her mark Friday, and now stands within four inches of fourth place in the conference.
Â
Richey's mark Friday also puts her in contention for a spot in the triple jump at the NCAA West Preliminary meet. Richey moves up to 67th in the west region with her mark, and now stands within nine inches of the 48th-ranked athlete in the event, which is where she'd need to be to qualify for the meet when the qualification period ends on May 17.
Â
Elsewhere for PSU, juniors
Tyson Stipic and
Rockwell Tufty tied each other in the high jump, as each cleared 6-07 (2.01m) at the Oregon Twilight. Stipic's clearance marks a huge personal best for the junior, as it beats his old best of 6-04.75 (1.95m) by over two-and-a-quarter inches. Stipic now ranks fifth all-time in the high jump at Portland State after Friday, and moves into a tie for sixth in the Big Sky this season.
Â
Additionally, sophomore
Ben Richardson shaved a couple of ticks off his personal best in the 800 meters Friday, as he finished the 'B' section of the event in 1:53.87. Richardson's time beats his old best of 1:54.18, set on the same track at the Oregon Relays three weeks ago.
Â
Redshirt junior
T-Roy Brown also had a busy day on the track for the Vikings, starting with the 'B' section of the 1,500 meters. Brown crossed the line in 3:54.58 in the 1,500, his third time breaking 3:55 in the 1,500 this season. Brown then returned to the track for a rare, 1,000-meter race later in the day, and faced an elite field that featured three runners from the professional Nike OTC Elite team. Brown fared well against the pros, finishing sixth overall in 2:32.17. Portland State does not have records for the outdoor 1,000 meters, but Brown's time would rank third all-time at PSU in the indoor 1,000 meters.
Â
The Vikings now enter the postseason portion of their schedule, as they head to the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Cheney, Wash., next week, May 13-16.
