LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Vikings swept day two at the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic in hosted by UNLV in Las Vegas, Nev. Portland State opened the day with a 10-0 win over Utah Valley in five innings before defeating Boise State 10-6 in the nightcap.

Portland State hit .273, slugged .409, and had an on-base percentage of .515 over the course of the days. Twenty-one total walks aided the Vikings' on-base percentage. Portland State walked a total of 83 times as a team in 2014 and it has already walked 47 times through just nine games.

Brittany Hendrickson went hitless on the day but walked five times and scored three runs.
Aubrey Nitschelm went 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI.

Ashley Smith went 2-for-5 with a walk and a hit by pitch. She scored four runs on the day and drove in four more with a pair of doubles.

Kristen Crawford and
Meagan Hendrix each threw a complete game for the Vikings combining for a 3.50 ERA.

Game 1 – Portland State 10, Utah Valley 0 – 5 InningsÂ
Portland State put together its most complete game of the year defeating Utah Valley by a score of 10-0 in five innings. The game remained scoreless until the Vikings plate five runs in the both the fourth and fifth innings to secure the run-rule victory.

Kristen Crawford threw the complete game shutout to pick up her third win of the season. She allowed just three hits while walking two and striking out two.
Â
Crawford has shown during her short Portland State career an ability to get out of trouble. She worked out of trouble with a runner at third and one out in the first and again in the second with two runners in scoring position and one out.

Another runner reached second with one out in the bottom of the third inning but did not go any further as the score remained scoreless through three innings.

The Vikings got on the board in a big way in the top of the fourth with five runs.
Brittany Hendrickson led off the inning with a walk and moved to second on an
Alex Flores single down the left field line. Hendrickson move to third and
Melissa Masters, who came into the game to run for Flores, moved to second on an infield single back to the pitcher from
Aubrey Nitschelm to load the bases.

Ashley Smith then doubled to left center to drive in both Hendrickson and Masters to put the Vikings up 2-0. Portland State added two more runs after Nitschelm and Smith scored on illegal pitches from Utah Valley starting pitcher B. Moore.

Mackenzie Bourbanis walked after Smiths double and moved her way around the bases to score on a throwing error by the Wolverine's second baseman to put the Vikings up 5-0.

Crawford worked around a one-out walk to keep Utah Valley scoreless through four innings.

Hendrickson, for the second straight inning, led off the fifth with a walk. Flores, after reentering the game to catch in the bottom of the fourth, doubled to left center. Nitschelm walked to load the bases for Smith for the second straight inning.

Instead of hitting a double, Smith was hit by a pitch to drive in another run to put the Vikings up 6-0. Bourbanis then grounded out to the pitcher, which brought in Flores for another run.

Jenna Stanford came to the plate next as a pinch hitter. Stanford entered the game 0-for-17 in her career at Portland State. She took a full-count pitch and hit it deep over the right field fence for a three-run, opposite field, home run for her first career hit as a Viking. Her home run put the Vikings up by a score of 10-0.

Crawford shut down the Wolverines in the bottom of the fifth to secure the run-rule win for the Vikings.

Flores went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Smith went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, three RBIs, and a hit by pitch. Hendrickson did not have an official plate appearance thanks to three walks in the game but she did score twice.

Game 2 – Portland State 10, Boise State 7Â
Boise State opened the game with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning off Portland State starting pitcher
Meagan Hendrix.

The Vikings countered with four runs in the bottom of the first. The first four Vikings walked to score their first run of the day. Nitschelm then singled through the left side to drive in another run. Smith put the ball into play to drive in the third run and reached on an error. Two batters later Carrisosa grounded out for the second out of the inning to drive in the fourth run.

Hendrix worked herself in and out of trouble in the top of the second inning. She held the Broncos scoreless through the top of the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning the Vikings loaded the bases with a single, double, and a walk with two outs.
Shae Nelson singled up the middle to drive in a pair of runs.
Rayleen Pallan then singled to reload the bases before Goranson walked for the third time in the game to drive in the third run of the inning and put the Vikings up 7-4.

The Broncos scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth to make the score 7-4.

The Vikings scored three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on three straight walks with the bases loaded. The Vikings walked a season-high 14 times in the game. The Vikings scored five runs on bases loaded walks.

Hendrix gave up two runs in the top of the seventh but was able to close out the complete game to pick up her first win of the season.

Goranson walked four times in the game driving in a pair of runs. Nelson went 2-for-2 with three runs scored.

The Vikings will closeout play at the Desert Classic Sunday afternoon against Hawai'i. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m. PT.
