THE OPENING TIP

      Portland State will play a pair of games this week, one at home and one on the road. The Vikings open the week Tuesday, Dec. 15 at home against the Seattle Redhawks. They then head to Eugene, Ore. on Thursday, Dec. 17 where they will take on the Oregon Ducks in their final non-conference road game of the season. Both games are slated for 7 p.m. PT starts.
      The Vikings will conclude non-conference action, back home at the Peter W. Stott Center, against Cal State Northridge on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 2 p.m. PT. Portland State opens Big Sky Conference action on the road at Sacramento State on Jan. 2.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Vikings put together their best game of the year Saturday against Corban, defeating the Warriors 90-76, at the Peter W. Stott Center. The Vikings scored 90 points and shot 40.5 percent from the floor, both season highs.
• Portland State had four players in double figure scoring and four with double digit rebounds.
• Sophomore G Cici West scored a career-high 23 points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for her second career double-double. 
• Freshman G Corey James posted her first career double-double with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. She also posted a career-high five assists. 
• Freshman guards Michaela Kay (15) and Bree Shepard (14) each added double-digit points. Freshman F Pia Jurhar (10) and junior F Danah Haley (10) added double-digit rebounds. 
• Portland State pulled down a season-high 61 rebounds in the game. The Vikings held a +17.0 rebounding margin, their best margin of the season. 
• Portland State turned the ball over a season-low 15 times. 
• Portland State held a 21-to-2 advantage in fast break points and a 38-to-18 advantage in the paint. 

SEATTLE QUICK HITS
• Head Coach Joan Bonvicini is 80-106 in seven seasons leading the Redhawks. Seattle is 4-5 overall this season, 2-1 at home, 2-3 on the road, and 0-1 at a neutral site. 
• Seattle went 10-21 overall and 6-8 in conference play a year ago. 
• Seattle has played four Big Sky Conference schools during its non-conference slate, going 1-3. The Redhawks won at Montana (58-44) but has lost at home against Montana State (80-51), at Idaho (64-60), and at Idaho State (83-67). 
• Seattle is averaging 61.9 points per game while giving up 67.9 ppg for a -5.9 scoring margin. The Redhawks are shooting .366 from the floor, .317 from three-point range, and .669 at the free-throw line. 
• Sophomore G Ashlyn Lewey is the team's leading scorer with 12.9 points per game this season after scoring just nine points in 13 games (0.7 ppg) a year ago. She also leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game. She has led the team in scoring five times. 
• Former Portland State student-athlete Delanie Parry will make her first appearance against the Vikings for Seattle. She has started every game this season for the Redhawks and is averaging 6.4 ppg. She leads the team with 25 assists and 28 turnovers. Parry played for the Vikings during the 2013-14 season. 

VS. SEATTLE: Seattle leads the all-time series with Portland State, 7-4. The Vikings lost the first three in the series, before winning the next four from 1979-2008. The teams have played each of the last four seasons, alternating home and away, with Seattle taking each. The Redhawks won 54-47 last season in Seattle. 

OREGON QUICK HITS
• Head Coach Kelly Graves is 21-17 overall in two seasons leading the Ducks. After going 13-17 in his first season in Eugene, Graves has guided the Ducks to a perfect 8-0 record this season. • Oregon opened the season with a two-point win at North Carolina, 79-77. The Ducks have not played away from the Matthew Knight Arena since. Oregon host UC Riverside on Tuesday, Dec. 15 before hosting the Vikings on Thursday, Dec. 17. 
• Oregon is averaging 83.2 points per, while giving up 60.0 ppg for a +23.3 scoring margin. The Ducks are shooting .534 from the floor, .438 from three-point range, and .679 from the free-throw line. They average 8.9 three-pointers per game. 
• The Ducks have out-rebounded opponents this season with a +11.4 rebounding margin.
• Senior F Jillian Alleyne leads the team in both points and rebounds per game, averaging 17.4 ppg and 13.6 rpg. She has led the team in scoring three times and has led the team in rebounding in every game. She has recorded double-digit rebounds in 47 consecutive games dating back to the 2013-14 season. 

VS. OREGON: Oregon leads the all-time series, 25-10, dating back to 1974. Oregon has won the last two meeting including a 63-56 win in Eugene last season. The last Portland State win came in double-overtime, 87-85, in 2012. The last five Portland State wins in the series have all come in overtime games.  

TEAM NOTES: Here are some quick-hitters about the Portland State women's basketball team through eight games:
• The Vikings are 1-7 overall this season, 0-4 on the road, and 1-3 at home.  
• Portland State is averaging 67.9 points per game this season while opponents are scoring 81.6 ppg (-13.8 scoring margin, last in the Big Sky Conference). 
• Portland State is shooting .357 from the floor, .262 from three-point range, and .708 from the free throw line. Portland State averages 5.6 three-pointers per game and 17.3 free throws per game.
• Portland State leads the conference in rebounding offense with 46.1 rebounds per game and in defensive rebounds with 31.6 per game. 
• Portland State picked up its first win of the season, 90-76, over Corban (12/12) at the Stott Center. 
• Portland State set several season highs in its win over Corban. The Vikings scored a season-high 90 points, while shooting a season-high 40.5 percent from the floor. They pulled down a season-high 61 rebounds and turned the ball over a season-low 15 times. 
• Portland State had four players with 10-plus points and four with 10-plus rebounds against Corban (12/12). 
• Portland State's first win of the season against Corban (12/12/15) was the first for Head Coach Lynn Kennedy at Portland State. It was also the 550th will all-time for Portland State. 

DANAH HALEY: Here are some quick hitters about Danah Haley, a junior forward from Los Angeles, CA.
• Opened the season with 10 points off the bench at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). Went 4-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-3 at the line, before fouling out of the game. 
• Scored career-high 15 points, again off the bench, at Long Beach State (11/15), going 4-for-10 from the floor and 7-for-9 at the line. 
• Now has three career double-digit scoring games and is averaging 7.0 points per game. 

PIA JURHAR: Here are some quick hitters about Pia Jurhar, a freshman forward from Vienna, Austria. 
• Started every game for the Vikings, averaging 4.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. 
• Recorded career-high eight points, going 2-for-5 from the floor and 4-for-6 from the line, with a career-high four blocks at South Dakota (12/5). 
• Pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds against Warner Pacific (11/21). 
• Went 1-for-2 from the floor and from the line for three points, while pulling down seven rebounds, in career debut at Cal State Fullerton (11/13).
• Played on the FIBA Senior Women's National Team that won the European Championship for Small Countries.

KIAN MCNAIR: Here are some quick hitters about Kian McNair, a freshman guard from Vallejo, CA. 
• Started seven out of eight games this season and is averaging 7.9 points per game. 
• Scored 13 points against South Dakota State (12/3) followed by a career-high 18 against South Dakota (12/5). She shot .444 from the floor over the two games, going 12-for-27. She added five three-pointers on 11 attempts (.455) and a pair of free throws. 
• Made Portland State debut with five points and five rebounds at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). 
• Posted first double-digit scoring game with 12 points in 24 minutes at Long Beach State (11/15). Went 3-for-5 from the floor, 2-for-3 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 at the line. 

CICI WEST: Here are some quick hitters about Cici West, a sophomore guard from Seattle, WA. 
• One of three letterwinners returning from the 2014-15 season. Played in 27 games, making seven starts. Averaged 3.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game last season. 
• Started the last five games after coming off the bench for the first three. Second on the team in scoring with 9.3 points per game.  
• Leads the team, and is second in the Big Sky Conference, with 9.5 rebounds per game. She leads the league in defensive rebounds (6.9 rpg) and is 10th in offensive rebounds (2.6 rpg).
• Has posted at least eight rebounds in each of the last five games. 
• Recorded second career double-double with a new career-high 23 points along with 14 rebounds against Corban (12/12). Also set career highs in field goals (8) and free throws (7) made. 
• Posted first career double-double with a then-career high 16 points and a career-high 18  rebounds in first start of the season against Portland (11/24). 
• Her 18 rebounds against Portland was the most ever by a Viking at the Peter W. Stott Center and is tied for fifth all-time in a single game. 
• Posted 14 rebounds at Long Beach State (11/15), while adding first eight points of the season.

BREE SHEPARD: Here are some quick hitters about Bree Shepard, a freshman guard from San Diego, CA. 
• Came off the bench for 14 points for second double-digit scoring performance of the season. Is averaging 6.6 points per game. 
• Posted first double-digit scoring game with 17 points at Long Beach State (11/15). Her 17 points is the second most by a Viking this season. She went 6-for-12 from the floor with a three-pointer and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line against the 49ers. 
• Made career debut scoring six points off the bench at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). 

COREY JAMES: Here are some quick hitters about Corey James, a freshman guard from Albany, OR. 
• Started the last six games and is averaging 8.6 points per game this season. 
• Recorded first career double-double with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds against Corban (12/12). 
• Scored a career-high 23 points against UC Davis (11/27), going 8-for-15 from the floor with four three-pointers. She also went 3-for-4 from the free-throw line and pulled down a career-high six rebounds. 
• Her 23 points against UC Davis is the most by a Viking this season. 

ASHLEY TORRES NEGRON: Here are some quick hitters about Ashley Torres Negron, a junior guard from Morovis, Puerto Rico. 
• Averaging 8.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. 
• Leads the team with a .839 (26-for-31) mark at the free-throw line. Started the season 11-for-11.  
• Posted 11 points in 18 minutes in a start against UC Davis (11/27). 
• Opened her Portland State career with 14 points at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). Went 2-for-8 from the floor, both three-pointers, and 8-for-8 from the line. 

ALICIA CARLINE: Here are some quick hitters about Alicia Carline, a senior forward from Fielding, New Zealand. 
• Started the first three games this season. Has missed the last three games due to injury. Is averaging 4.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. 
• Opened the season with eight rebounds and five blocks at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). It was her third game with five blocks. Has recorded a block in 10-of-11 career Portland State games. She leads the league in total blocked shots with seven and is second with 3.5 per game. 
• Missed 20 games in 2014-15 as a junior due to injury and illness. Played in nine games making eight starts and averaged 6.9 points and 6.3 rebounds in 21.7 minutes. Shot .433 going 26-for-60.

MICHAELA KAY: Here are some quick hitters about Michaela Kay, a freshman guard from Spokane, WA. 
• Became first Viking in history to record 20 points in debut, posting 22 points at Cal State Fullerton (11/13). Went 7-for-15 from the floor, 5-for-11 from three point range, and 3-4 from the line. Led the Vikings with eight rebounds. 
• Leads the Vikings with 10.0 points per game this season and has posted four double-digit scoring games. Also leads the team with 26 assists in 31.1 minutes per game. 
• Has hit five three-pointers in a game twice this season and has hit at least one in all but one game this season.

PRESEASON TEAM NOTES: Here are some quick-hitters about the Portland State women's basketball team heading into the season:
• Portland State went 4-25 overall and 2-16 in Big Sky conference play en route to a last place finish in the league. It was the Vikings' worst record since the 2004-05 season when they went 3-23 overall and 1-13 in Big Sky Conference play. 
• Portland State returns just three letterwinners from the 2014-15 season. The Vikings lost nine letterwinners and all five starters off last year's squad, including five of its top six scorers from a year ago. 
• Portland State returners have a combined four letters of experience at Portland State. There are a combined seven total letters of NCAA Division I experience on the roster, including transfers and redshirts. 
• Portland State adds five incoming freshmen, five transfers, and a pair of redshirts for 2015-16. Three of the five transfers will have to sit out the season due to NCAA Transfer Rules.
• Portland State has five foreign born players on the roster: Courtney West (Sydney, Australia); Pia Jurhar (Vienna, Austria); Te Oramae Solomon (Auckland, New Zealand); Alicia Carline (Fielding, New Zealand); Ashley Torres Negron (Morovis, Puerto Rico)
• Portland State is in its 20th season as a member of the Big Sky Conference 
• Construction of the new Viking Pavilion will begin in the spring of 2016. The Pavilion will consist of an upgraded Stott Center facility, including a new arena for Viking basketball, as well as athletic training enhancements, academic upgrades and overall facility enhancements. The Viking Pavilion will more than double the capacity of PSU's home court (to be situated on the east side of the building) to somewhere between 3,000-5,000 seats.
• The 12-team Big Sky Conference has a new post-season set-up and format. The Big Sky will move its conference tournament to a neutral site in Reno, NV. All 12 teams will be part of the tournament for the first time as it takes place at the Reno Events Center.
