Portland, OR - Portland State started fast and never took its foot off the gas, rolling to an easy 80-62 win over Montana State at the Stott Center.
It helps to shoot a school-record percentage from three-point range as well, as the Vikings made 9-11 long-distance attempts for an .818 mark. That bettered a 10-13 performance (.769) against Weber State on Jan. 30, 2003. Overall, the Vikings shot 28-50 from the field for a .560 percentage - its best effort against a Division I opponent this season.Â
The strong shooting came at the right time, just one game after PSU's poorest offensive performance in a Big Sky game and only .370 shooting in a loss to Montana.
Senior guard DaShaun Wiggins led the way with 18 points. Senior guard Tim Douglas came off the bench to score 17, including 5-8 from the field, 3-3 from three-point range and 4-4 at the line. Douglas also had a game-high five assists.Â
Portland State, never trailed in the game, cruising to its 11th win of the season (11-9) and now stands at 5-5 in Big Sky Conference play.
Perhaps still smarting from a shoddy second half against Montana on Thursday, the Vikings came out on fire against the Bobcats. Five different Vikings scored as PSU jumped to an 18-3 lead in the first six minutes. MSU didn't have a field goal until Zach Green hit a lay-in at the 13:53 mark of the first half.
Portland State led by as many as 18 on two occasions in the first half and went into the locker room with a 47-35 advantage. The Vikings shot .536 in the half, led by senior guard Gary Winston's 4-4 effort (including three three-pointers).
A few minutes into the second half the Vikings went on a 14-2 run. Wiggins hit a pair of three-pointers and a pair of two-point jump shots in the flurry. That had PSU ahead 65-43 with just under 11 minutes to play.
The closest the Bobcats came the remainder of way was a 12-point deficit.Â
In addition to excellent field goal shooting, the Vikings made 15-19 at the line (.789). PSU made 10 steals, forced 16 Bobcat turnovers and scored 17 points on the fast break.Â
Winston finished with 11 points and three assists. Tiegbe Bamba scored 10 points, hauled down six rebounds and made three steals in 32 minutes off the bench.
Montana State dropped to 4-17 on the season, 1-8 in Big Sky Conference play.Â
Michael Dison scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Bobcats. Eric Norman had nine points and 10 boards.Â
