PORTLAND – The Portland State softball team dropped its first two games against Weber State Friday night at Erv Lind Stadium. The Wildcats took the game one by a score of 7-2 before taking game two, 4-3.
Junior shortstop
Alicia Fine led the Vikings at the plate going 3-for-7 with a pair of doubles, a run scored, and a run batted in. Senior
Crysta Conn came up with a pair of clutch hits going 2-for-3 with a team-best three RBIs on the day.
Portland State took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game one when Conn singled in
Mackenzie Bourbanis from third base. Weber State tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the top of the second.
The score remained the same until the Wildcats plated three unearned runs in the top of the sixth off Portland State starting pitcher
Meagan Hendrix. Weber State added three earned runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-1 lead.
Hendrix gave up seven runs, four earned, on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. She fell to 3-8 on the season in the losing effort.
The Vikings added a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Fine doubled in
Shae Nelson but it was too little, too late and the Vikings fell 7-2.
Portland State had an opportunity to jump out to a quick start in game two when it loaded the bases with nobody out in the bottom of the first. Aubrey Nitshelm hit a scorching line drive to the third baseman for the third out.
The next PSU batter reached on a fielder's choice as the Wildcats got the runner going home. A ground out to third ended the inning as the Vikings left the bases loaded. The Vikings would strand 12 runners on base in the game.
Weber State scored twice in the top of the second to take a 2-0 lead. Conn once again singled in a run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to one. The Wildcats increased their lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth.
Portland State pulled to within one run with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth but could not plate the tying run and fell 4-3 in game two.
Melissa Masters allowed three earned runs on five hits over four innings in a no decision.
Karyn Wright took the loss allowing one run on four hits while throwing the final three innings of the game.
The Vikings will conclude their season Saturday against the Wildcats. The season finale is slated for a 12 p.m. start. It will be Senior Day as the Vikings honor their two seniors:
Crysta Conn and
Becca Bliss.
