RECAPS - DAY ONE | DAY TWO | DAY THREEFLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — Senior
Sarah Dean, the Viking women's 4x100-meter relay team and junior
Jazmin Ratcliff won Big Sky titles Saturday, as the Portland State track and field teams closed the Big Sky Championships at Lumberjack Stadium.
Â
Dean blew away the field in winning the Big Sky title in the women's 1,500 meters, as she finished in 4:34.88, more than three full seconds ahead of the No. 2 runner, Weber State's Jamie Stokes in 4:37.95.
Â
"This is amazing because last year I did not go to conference due to injury," Dean said. "This year, with the help of the coaches and my teammates, it really started coming together so this feels amazing."
Â
The Vikings' 4x100-meter relay team, meanwhile, won the Big Sky title in the short relay in a school- and championship meet-record time of 45.11 seconds.
Jasmine Woods,
Genna Settle,
Baileh Simms and
Jazmin Ratcliff won the title for the Vikings, breaking Portland State's own meet record of 45.19 seconds from 2012 in the process.
Â
"We did awesome today and it feels great being the only returner from last year's 4x100 team," Ratcliff said after the team's win. "For us to pull off the school record as a brand new unit is a really big accomplishment and I am so proud of my team."
Â
Ratcliff also won the Big Sky title in the 100-meter hurdles later Saturday, finishing in 13.30 seconds after breaking the conference record in the prelims of the event the day before.
"It means a lot to win because at the beginning of the season I was struggling a lot and I had hopes of going to nationals," Ratcliff said. "It was cloudy at the beginning of the season but now I can see myself possibly at nationals and in only my second year competing in hurdles is a big accomplishment."
Â
Freshman
CeCelia Jackson placed third behind Ratcliff in the 100-meter hurdles as well, giving her All-Big Sky honors with her finish in 13.53 seconds, tying the personal best she set in the heptathlon on Wednesday. Jackson also scored for the Vikings with a seventh-place finish in the women's 400-meter hurdles later in the day, finishing the race in 1:03.82.
Â
The three Big Sky titles helped the PSU women total 89 points at the Big Sky meet, placing them fourth behind Northern Arizona (135 points), Montana (119.5 points) and Montana State (110 points). The PSU men, meanwhile, placed 10th with 29.5 points at the meet, the men's team's highest point total since scoring 30 in 2010.
Â
Outside of the conference champions, the Vikings also earned five other All-Big Sky honors Saturday. Sophomore
Rockwell Tufty led the Vikings' other All-Big Sky honorees, as he broke the school record in the men's high jump while placing second in the event. Tufty cleared 6-09.75 (2.08m) in the high jump Saturday, breaking Brian Coushey's 1985 school record in the event, which senior
Nevin Lewis tied during the first day of the Big Sky decathlon on Wednesday.
Â
Besides Tufty, Woods followed her share of the 4x100-meter relay title with All-Big Sky honors in both the women's 100 and 200 meters Saturday. Woods placed second in the women's 100 meters by just .01 seconds, finishing in a wind-aided 11.55 seconds, right behind Northern Colorado's Rachel Hinker at 11.54. Woods then followed that with a huge personal best in the 200 meters, finishing third in 23.88 seconds, nearly a full half-second faster than the PR of 24.34 seconds she ran in the prelims of the event Friday.
Â
Woods' time in the 200 moves her up to third all-time in the event at Portland State, as she and freshman
Whitney Diggs, who finished just .01 seconds behind Woods for fourth Saturday in 23.89 seconds, became just the third and fourth runners to crack 24 seconds in the 200 meters in school history.
Â
Additionally, Settle placed sixth behind Woods and Diggs in the 200 meters, finishing in 24.49 seconds. Settle also scored for the Vikings in the 100 meters, finishing fifth behind Woods and Ratcliff in 11.67 seconds. Ratcliff placed fourth in the 100 meters in 11.62 seconds.
Â
Sophomore
Sheldon Prince also earned All-Big Sky honors with a third-place finish in the men's 400 meters, finishing in 47.83 seconds, and followed that with a seventh-place finish in the men's 200 meters later in the day. Prince ran the 200 in 21.66 seconds.
Â
Junior
Montaisha Moore, meanwhile, finished as the Vikings' final All-Big Sky performer at the meet, as she placed third in the triple jump with a seasonal best of 39-08.50 (12.10m).
Â
Sophomore
Michael Kubisiak and freshman
Gifton Okoronkwo also scored for the Vikings with seventh-place finishes in the men's 100 meters and men's triple jump, respectively. Kubisiak placed seventh in the 100 in 10.82 seconds, while Okoronkwo placed seventh in the triple jump with a personal-best jump of 45-03.50 (13.80m).
Â
The Vikings will next send a small group of qualified athletes to the NCAA West Preliminary meet, which runs from May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Ark. The Vikings have three athletes with good chances to qualify for the meet in Dean (1,500m, 10,000m), Ratcliff (100m Hurdles) and Jackson (100m Hurdles).
