Lewis, Jackson Second in Decathlon, Heptathlon After First Day at Big Sky Championships

RESULTS

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. —
Portland State multi-event athletes Nevin Lewis and CeCelia Jackson stand in second place of the decathlon and heptathlon, respectively, after the first day of each event Wednesday at the Big Sky Championships at Lumberjack Statdium.

Lewis stands in second in the decathlon with 3,872 points after jockeying for position with Montana State's Jeff Mohl throughout the day Wednesday. Lewis ran out to a strong start in the decathlon with personal bests in the 100 meters (11.08 seconds) and long jump (22-00.25, 6.71m), before winning the shot put outright with a throw of 42-03.50 (12.89m).

Mohl was even stronger out of the gate, however, and was leading Lewis through three events until Lewis uncorked a school-record-tying jump of 6-09.00 (2.06m) in the high jump. Lewis' mark tied Brian Coushay's 29-year-old school record in the event, and vaulted him into the lead in the decathlon over Mohl with 3,109 points to that point in the competition.

Mohl responded well in the final event of the day, though, as he placed second overall in the 400 meters in 49.37 seconds, while Lewis finished four spots back of Mohl in 51.13 seconds.

Lewis trails Mohl by 16 points going into the second day of the event as a result with 3,872 points to Mohl's 3,888. Lewis' score still marks an improvement over his first-day score at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge, however, as he had 3,851 after the first day of that meet, 21 points less than his total Wednesday.

Jackson, meanwhile, also improved her first-day score from the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge, as she finished with 3,169 points Wednesday, 58 points better than her first-day score at the Mondo Mid-major Challenge on April 10. Jackson recorded three overall personal bests en route to her first-day score, which placed her second in the field after four events.

Jackson opened the heptathlon with a school-record 13.53 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, giving her a whopping 1,046 points to start the competition. Jackson's time broke Joenisha Vinson's school record of 13.59 seconds, set during the 2011 season. Jackson's time also would have moved her up to 28th in the NCAA West Outdoor Qualifying list going into the day, which would put her in position to qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary meet in the event later this month.

Jackson followed with another personal best in the high jump, clearing 5-04.25 (1.63m) to tie for fourth place in the event.

Jackson was leading the competition at that point, but fell out of first place with a 13th-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 29-05.25 (8.97m).

Jackson recovered to post her third personal best in the final event of the day, however, running the closing 200 meters in 24.97 seconds to place second overall in the event.

Jackson trails Montana State's Carley McCutchen by 25 points after the first day of the competition, as McCutchen leads the field with 3,194 total points. Montana's Lindsey Hall also stands just four points behind Jackson with 3,165 points for third.

Besides Lewis and Jackson, sophomore Kevin Robinson also competed in the decathlon Wednesday, and recorded a huge first-day personal-best score of 3,234 points to put him in ninth place going into the second day of the competition.

Robinson recorded his big first-day score with personal bests in the 100 meters, long jump and 400 meters. Robinson ran 11.58 seconds in the 100 meters to open the competition, then followed with a personal-best jump of 20-04.25 (6.20m) in the long jump. Robinson's third PR of the day then capped the first day, as he ran 52.92 seconds in the closing 400.

Robinson's score of 3,234 points stands 142 points higher than the 3,092 points he tallied after the first day of the decathlon at the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge.

All three of the Vikings will continue their respective competitions Thursday, with the final five events of the decathlon starting at 10 a.m. (PT), and the final three events of the heptathlon starting at 10:30 a.m. (PT).

Besides chasing Mohl, Lewis will also be chasing a better national rank in the decathlon, as he currently stands just on the right side of qualifying for the national meet in the decathlon at 23rd nationally. Only the top 24 declared student-athletes in the decathlon qualify for the national meet, meaning Lewis could give himself much more breathing room with a high score Thursday. Jackson will also be chasing the USATF Junior National qualifying standard in the heptathlon, which she can hit with a score of 4,800 points or higher.
