Hornets Sting Vikings with Doubleheader Sweep

SACRAMENTO –
Sacramento State's staunch pitching led the Hornets to a doubleheader sweep of the Vikings Friday afternoon at Shae Stadium in Sacramento, CA. The Hornets took the first game 5-2 before winning game two 3-0.
 
Sacramento State's pitchers threw a pair of complete games allowing just two runs, neither of which were earned, while striking out a combined 19 batters.
 
Brittany Hendrickson had success at the plate for the Vikings going 3-for-5 with a double and drove in the Vikings' only two runs on the day. Alicia Fine also recorded three hits and scored a run.
                                                                      
Sacramento State (21-18 overall, 9-4 Big Sky Conference) got out to an early 3-0 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. The Hornets plated their three runs off Vikings' starter Karyn Wright who would end up with the game one loss.
 
The Hornets added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth to go up 5-0 through five complete. Sacramento State's starter Caitlin Brooks took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Fine broke up the no-hit bid with one out in the sixth. Shae Nelson reached on an error during the previous at bat. Becca Bliss also reached on a fielding error to load the bases with one out.
 
Hendrickson came up next and drove in her 22nd and 23rd RBIs of the season scoring Nelson and Fine with a double to the left center gap to break up the shutout. Hendrickson went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and a walk in game one.
 
The Vikings were unable to do anything else against Brooks and fell 5-2 in game one. Brooks threw her 12th complete game of the year striking out a career-high 13 batters to improve to 7-5 with the win.
 
The Hornets plated a run in the bottom of the first in game two off Portland State's Melissa Masters with a leadoff home run to right field. A pair of RBI singles in the bottom of the third increased the Hornets' lead to 3-0 through three complete.
 
Meagan Hendrix came on in relief of Masters and kept the Vikings in the game with four shutout innings. She allowed just two hits while striking out a career-high eight batters in her best outing of the year.
 
However, Portland State was unable to get anything going against Sacramento State's game two starter, Taylor Stroud. Stroud threw a complete game shutout allowing six hits while striking out six and walking none.
 
The Vikings will try and salvage a game in the series, which concludes Saturday. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m. Following Saturday's game with the Hornets, the Vikings will travel to Eugene, OR to take on No. 1 Oregon Tuesday, April 22. It was supposed to be a doubleheader but has been shortened to a single game, starting at 4 p.m.
 
NOTES: Portland State was officially eliminated from the Big Sky Tournament with its loss in game one … Alicia Fine hit safely in both games and raised her season batting average .315 … Fine has now hit safely in 22 of the last 24 games.
