Lanz’s Late Free Throws Win It for Vikings

Kate Lanz hit a pair of free throws with three seconds on the clock to give the Vikings a 62-60 win over the Weber State Wildcats Thursday night in Ogden, Utah.

Lanz had the ball at the top of the key with the score tied at 60-60 as the Vikings played for the final shot. Lanz drove the lane, went up for a jumper in the paint, and was fouled. She went to the line and knocked down a pair of free throws giving to give the Vikings a two-point lead.

Weber State (7-21 overall, 3-16 Big Sky Conference) had a final shot but the ball fell short of the rim to give the Vikings the two-point win on the road. The win gave the Vikings back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Lanz scored her game-high 16 points going 5-for-13 from the floor with a three-pointer. She also went 5-for-9 from the free-throw line including the game winner. Lanz came one rebound shy of her second straight double-double with nine rebounds.

Portland State (8-20, 6-13) had two others in double figures. Mikaela Rivard scored 15 points in the game for her ninth double-digit scoring game of the season.

Allie Brock had a near perfect game shooting going 3-for-3 from the floor, 1-for-1 from distance, and 4-for-5 from the line. She also added seven rebounds and two blocks in 30 minutes played.

The Vikings trailed by three at the half, 29-26. Thursday was just the second time this season that the Vikings have come back from a first-half deficit to win. It was also their biggest comeback of the season after they trailed by 13 points midway through the first half.

Portland State trailed 60-56 with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Lanz tied it with back-to-back baskets with 47 seconds remaining. Lariel Powell came up with a big steal with 21 seconds to give the Vikings the ball for the final shot. Lanz was fouled on the shot and made the game winning free throws.

Weber State forced 26 Portland State turnovers in the game and turned them into 27 points. The Wildcats also outscored the Vikings 28-to-20 in the paint.

Weber State had four players in double figures led by Jalen Carpenter's 15. The Wildcats shot 35.4 percent from the floor and 2-for-11 from three-point range.
