FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Senior
Joenisha Vinson continued her momentum from day one of the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championships, not only taking the heptathlon title but breaking the record of PSU Hall of Famer Robin Unger, in the process. Vinson set her new personal record and school record with her total of 5,488 in Forest Grove, Ore., on Thursday.
Vinson bested Unger's Viking-best mark of 5,356 set back in 1996 and she currently sits with the 13th best heptathlon mark in the country.
The Phoenix, Arizona native entered the day in first-place in the heptathlon with 3,360 points with three events left to go.
Vinson came out sharp in the long jump with a mark of 5.95 meters (19-06.25), setting a new personal record. She then held her own in both the javelin and 800-meter run coming in with a sixth and ninth-place finish, respectively. In the javelin she threw a final distance of 33.99m (111-06) for 552 points. Meanwhile in her final event, Vinson, who possessed a sizeable lead, finished middle of the pack coming in with a time of 2:26.12 and 742 points.
Vinson bested Southern Utah's Shaye Maurer who came in second with a mark of 5,209 points with Idaho State's Samantha Berryman coming in third with 4,878 points.
The men's decathlon also concluded on Thursday as Montana's Austin Emory, who entered meet 13th in the Big Sky, maintained his first-place position, taking the event with 7,010 points and attaining 10 team points. Idaho State's Harley Goedhart scored his team eight team points from second, with a mark of 6,885 points with teammate Justin Crister taking third with a mark of 6,624 points and six team points.
At the end of two days Portland State leads in the women's overall team score with Vinson's heptathlon win, with 10 points. Meanwhile Southern Utah and Idaho State sit second and third respectively, with eight points and seven points. On the men's side its Idaho State with 17 points with Montana in second with 11 and Sacramento State, third with three.
With the mutli-events concluded, teams focus on individual events. Aside from the 3,000-meter steeplechase, 10,000-meter and field events, Friday's contests will be preliminary events with the finals taking place on Saturday.
