PORTLAND – Senior pitcher
Anna Bertrand became the all-time leader in career strikeouts at Portland State in the second game of the Vikings day-night double-dip with the Oregon State Beavers Tuesday night at Erv Lind Stadium. Oregon State took the first game 7-2 before taking game two 4-3.
Bertrand entered they day one shy of Morgan Seibert's career strikeout record of 775. Bertrand struck out two in the second inning of game two to set the new Portland State mark. She struck out four batters in the game and now has 778 for her career. Earlier this season Bertrand set the Portland State all-time career wins mark that now stands at 70.
The Vikings (19-28 overall) picked up an unearned run in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead over the Beavers (32-17). PSU game one starting pitcher
Raya Johnson pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the first but could not get out of the second unscathed. OSU scored three runs, one earned thanks to a Portland State throwing error, to take a 3-1 lead.
The Beavers made it a 4-1 game with a run in the top of the fifth after back-to-back doubles to start the inning.
After Johnson pitched her way through a tough top of the sixth,
Crysta Conn hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 4-2. Conn finished the game going 1-for-3 with the home run and went 2-for-5 on the day.
Oregon State added three more runs off Johnson in the top of the seventh to take a 7-2 lead. Oregon State starter Tina Andreana set the Vikings down in order in the bottom of the inning to improve to 9-5 with the win. Andreana allowed one earned run on four hits while walking three and striking out eight.
Johnson fell to 2-7 on the season with the loss. She allowed seven runs, five earned, on 10 hits while walking six and striking out three.
Bertrand started game two for the Vikings and stranded the Beavers' leadoff runner on third in the top of the first. She stranded another runner in scoring position in the second. Bertrand struck out a pair in the second surpassing Seibert for the all-time Portland State strikeout record.
The Vikings broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead. McEachran doubled to center field with one out for the Vikings. McEachran then came around to score after
Sadie Lopez reached on a throwing error by the Beavers' second baseman. Lopez moved to second on the play. McEachran went 2-for-3 in the game and finished 3-for-7 with a pair of runs on the day.
After
Brittany Hendrickson drove in Lopez from second on a single,
Lauran Bliss singled to right field and
Crysta Conn got hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Vikings.
Alexa Morales drove in Hendrickson from third on a shallow sacrifice fly to center giving the Vikings the 3-0 lead. Morales went 2-for-4 on the day with a walk and a run batted in.
Oregon State cut into the lead with two runs, one earned, in the top of the fourth. The Beavers scored two more in the top of the sixth to take their first lead of the game at 4-3.
Conn led off the bottom of the sixth for the Vikings with a single to center before being lifted for pinch runner
Sadie Petersen. Petersen came all the way around from first and tried to score on a double to center by Morales but was cut down at the plate preventing the tying run.
The Vikings could not tie the game in the seventh and the Beavers took the game 4-3. Portland State outhit Oregon State 8-to-7 in the ballgame while each team committed an error.
Bertrand fell to 15-15 on the season with the loss. She threw the complete game allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits. She walked seven while striking out four.
Marina Demore improved to 19-9 on the season with the win. She allowed just one earned run on the day while giving up eight hits. She struck out four and did not surrender a walk.
Portland State has just three regular season games left as it travels to North Dakota this weekend for a three-game Big Sky Conference set. The Vikings are within striking distance of the regular season title being just one game back of Idaho State in the standings. The UND series starts with a Friday doubleheader. First pitch is slated to begin at 12 p.m. PDT.
