HONOLULU, Hawaii
Brittany Hendrickson's second five-RBI game of the season propelled the Vikings to a doubleheader split on their first day of action at the 2013 Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Honolulu, Hawaii. Portland State took its first game against East Carolina 9-0 in five innings before dropping its second to No. 21 Hawai'i by a score of 7-0.

Hendrickson went 2-for-6 on the day with a double and five RBIs. Crysta Conn led the Vikings going 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored on the day and extended her current hitting streak to eight games.

Game 1 – Portland State (6-15) 9, East Carolina (8-12) 0 – Five Innings

Portland State starter Anna Bertrand returned to form against East Carolina throwing her first complete game shutout of the season. Bertrand allowed just two hits in the game while walking two and striking out three. She improved to 3-9 on the season with the win.

Bertrand set down the Pirates in order in the first before having to work her way out of trouble in the second. The Pirates had runners on second and third with one out in the second on a PSU error, sacrifice bunt, a walk, and a passed ball. It did not faze Bertrand as she struck out the next batter for the second out and then induced a grounder right back to her for the third.

East Carolina only reached second base once the rest of the game and did not register its first hit of the game until the fourth.

The Vikings got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Lauran Bliss and Conn led off the inning with back-to-back singles. They both moved up a base on a passed ball before Bliss was driven in by Carly McEachran's sacrifice fly to left field scoring the first run of the day.

A wild pitch put Conn on third before Becca Bliss walked putting runners on the corners. Alicia Fine then hit a double to left field driving in Conn and moving Becca Bliss to third base. Becca Bliss and Fine were both driven in on a Henderickson single up the middle giving the Vikings a 4-0 lead through three innings.

Portland State added five more runs in the bottom of the fourth increasing its lead to 9-0. Hendrickson capped the inning with a bases loaded double to center field which cleared the bases giving the Vikings the 9-0 lead.

The first Pirate reached base on a single in the top of the fifth but was then put out at second on a fielder's choice. The Vikings then ended the game with a 6-4-3 double play winning the game 9-0 in five innings.

Hendrickson went 2-for-3 with a double and five RBIs in the game. Cone went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored. Six Vikings recorded hits in the game with two coming up with multiple-hit games.

Game 2 – No. 21 Hawai'i (14-5) 7, Portland State (6-16) 0

No. 21 Hawai'i got on the board quickly with four runs in the bottom of the first inning off Portland State starting pitcher Karyn Wright. Hawai'i nearly hit for the cycle as a team in the first as it hit a double, triple, home run, but was missing out on the single. The Rainbow Wahine added three more runs in the bottom of the second to take an early 7-0 lead.

After giving up the early runs, Wright settled down and threw four scoreless innings allowing five hits the rest of the game and did not allow a runner past second. Wright threw the complete game allowing seven earned runs on nine hits while walking five and striking out three. She fell to 1-5 on the season with the loss.

Kala Parnaby threw a complete game shutout for Hawai'i allowing just two Portland State hits while walking one and tying the school record with 15 strike outs.

The Vikings will be back out on the field Saturday for two more games. They start the day with an exhibition game against the Tokyo Women's College of Physical Education at 4 p.m. PT before a rematch with Hawai'i at 6 p.m. PT.
