OGDEN, Utah – Freshman catcher
Lauran Bliss went 3-for-7 on the day with five runs batted in and her third home run of the season leading the Vikings to a doubleheader sweep of Weber State Friday afternoon in Ogden, Utah. The Vikings secured the three-game series win with the sweep.
Becca Bliss went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a pair of walks on the day while
Alicia Fine went 2-for-6 with a run scored and three RBIs. Senior pitcher
Anna Bertrand picked up both wins improving to 8-12 on the season. She threw 9 2/3 innings allowing two earned runs for a 1.45 earned run average.
Game 1 – Portland State (10-21, 3-1) 5, Weber State (6-22, 2-2) 2
Portland State got on the board with two runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. L. Bliss doubled in
Carly McEachran and B. Bliss, both reached via the walk.
Bertrand started for the Vikings and struck out the first batter she faced in the bottom of the first before London Clarke reached on an infield single to third. Portland State then got out of the inning when Bertrand struck out the next batter and then L. Bliss threw out Clarke trying to steal second for an inning ending strike 'em out, throw 'em out double play.
Rudi Barrios walked to lead off the bottom of the third for the Wildcats and was then thrown out trying to steal second. It was the second runner thrown out by L. Bliss in the game. The next two batters singled before Clarke fouled out to third for the second out of the inning. Brook Silva doubled to left center scoring two to tie the game at 2-2. Janel Cunningham then fouled out to L. Bliss behind the plate to end the inning.
The Vikings added three runs on three hits, including a pair of doubles, in the top of the fifth inning to take a 5-2 lead.
Alexa Morales doubled to center with one out. After
Brianna Celaya pinch ran for Morales,
Aubrey Nitschelm walked.
Sadie Lopez then doubled to center scoring Celaya and moving Nitchelm to second. Both were then driven in when McEachran singled down the left field line. McEacrhan finished the game going 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs. She also walked and recorded three putouts.
Weber State left two runners on, six for the game, in the bottom of the fifth before going in order in the sixth and the seventh to end the game.
Bertrand threw a complete game allowing just two earned runs on five hits. She struck out seven while walking five. She improved to 7-12 on the season with the win and 3-0 in Big Sky Conference play.
Morgan Allaband allowed five earned runs on five hits while throwing a complete game. She walked four and struck out five while falling to 3-14 with the loss.
The Vikings only had five hits in the game but got them when they needed to. Portland State went 3-for-5 with runners in scoring position and 3-for-7 with runners on base.
Game 2 – Portland State (11-21, 4-1) 10, Weber State (2-23, 2-3) 3
The Vikings batted around in the top of the first inning of game two scoring four runs on five hits. L. Bliss drove in the first run doubling to center field scoring B. Bliss who reached on an infield single to shortstop with one out. Hendrickson then singled up the middle moving L. Bliss to third.
Two batters later, Fine singled to center scoring both L. Bliss and Hendrickson. Morales then singled before Nitschelm walked to load the bases. Lopez walked with the bases loaded scoring Fine from third. McEachran popped out to the second baseman to end the inning stranding three runners after the Vikings stranded just one in game one.
Weber State scored a pair of runs after Desiree Mejia doubled in two with one out in the bottom of the third inning. Following Mejia's double, Bertrand came in to pitch in relief of starter
Karyn Wright. Wright went 2 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits. She walked one and struck out one while getting the no decision.
McEachran drove in Nitschelm on a sacrifice fly to right field increasing the Vikings lead to 5-2 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Portland State added a four-spot in the top of the sixth. Morales reached on an error and then scored two batters later when Lopez reached on the Wildcats' second error of the inning. B. Bliss singled to the shortstop with two outs driving in Lopez. L. Bliss then hit her third home run of the season to give the Vikings a 9-2 lead.
Bertrand was lifted for
Raya Johnson to start the bottom of the sixth inning. She walked in a run but struck out the side. The Vikings added another run in the top of the seventh to go up 10-3 before Johnson set down the Wildcats in order in the seventh to win the game for the Vikings.
Bertrand picked up her second win of the day throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. She allowed just two hits while walking one and striking out three. She improved to 8-12 on the season.
Kylee Colvin threw 5 2/3 innings allowing nine runs, four earned on eight hits. She walked two and struck out five. She fell to 4-4 on the season with the loss.
The Vikings' two, three, and four hitters went a combined 6-for-12 with five runs scored, four RBIs, a double, and a home run. Portland State as a team went 7-for-16 (.438) with runners on base and 4-for-11 (.364) with runners in scoring position.
The Vikings will go for the series sweep Saturday with first pitch slated to start at 11 a.m. PDT.
